Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass—The Connecticut College field hockey team erupted for four second half goals, sending them past Babson College, 5-2, tonight in non-conference matchup at MacDowell Field. Junior Brittany Fitzgerald (Ridgefield, Conn.) led the Camels with three goals and two assists, while teammate Lauren Gaffny (North Andover, Mass.) chipped in with two goals, scoring once in each half. The visitors broke open a one-goal game with three tallies in the final ten minutes to put the game out of reach. First-year Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) scored twice for Babson, and now has six goals in her last three games.
Connecticut College (4-2) opened up the scoring just 44 seconds into the game when Gaffny scored her scored her second goal of the season. Following a Babson turnover, Fitzgerald pressed forward and found Gaffny who hit a hard shot inside the left post, giving the Camels a 1-0 advantage. In the 20th minute, Gaffny found herself behind the Babson back line, but her attempt at giving Connecticut College a two-goal lead was denied when senior goalkeeper Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass.) charged out of the cage and poked the ball out of harm's way.
The Beavers (6-4) would equalize just under eight minutes before halftime when Malone knocked home a cross from Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, MA) for her seventh goal of the season. Following a penalty corner, Lockwood beat her defender and sent a hard cross through the goal mouth, connecting with Malone, who beat the Camels goalkeeper, Becca Napolitano (Hamden, Con.), inside the right post. Connecticut College had the final scoring chance of the first half when Jennifer Morgan (Orange, Conn.) broke down the left wing on a break away, but again Pashos charged off her line and forced Morgan to shoot just wide, keeping the game 1-1 at halftime.
The Camels took the lead for good just 8:54 into the second half on Fitzgerald's first goal of the game, following a Babson yellow card. Kat Barker (Dedham, Mass.) carried the ball up the right wing and hit a long pass through the midfield to Fitzgerald, who beat a charging Pashos to find the back of the cage for the 2-1 advantage.
The Beavers successfully killed off a second yellow card penalty, clinging to a one-goal deficit, but finally succumbed to the Camel pressure as Gaffny and Fitzgerald each added their second goals of the day, 2:26 apart, putting Connecticut College up 4-1 with 7:20 remaining. Fitzgerald set up Gaffny's goal on a great cross to the front of the net at 60:14, and Fitzgerald put away a Emily Scribner (White River Junction, Vt.) pass following a penalty corner minutes later for the three-goal bulge.
Malone added her second goal of the game for Babson at 68:53 when she knocked home a rebound, but Fitzgerald put the finishing touches on the win for the Camels, scoring with 18 seconds remaining for the final margin.
Napolitano made five saves in victory for Connecticut College, while Pashos made four saves for the Beavers, who were outshot 17-15 for the game.
Connecticut College returns to action this Saturday when they face off against Bowdoin College in a 12:00 noon start in New London. Babson College will travel to Worcester on Saturday for a 1:00pm matchup against NEWMAC foe WPI.
