Box Score LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) scored twice in the first half to give Babson a 2-0 lead after one period, and the Beavers went on for a 4-1 non-conference win over the Bates field hockey team on Sunday at Campus Avenue Field.
Malone tallied her fifth and sixth goals of the season in the 23rd and 33rd minutes of the first half, both capitalizing upon fast-break opportunities, putting the Beavers on top despite Bates' keeping the ball in the Babson end for most of the period.
Bates sophomore goalie Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) had a terrific game, stopping many 1-on-1 chances. Prior to Malone's first tally, Otley had a diving stick save to keep the game scoreless.
Babson added to its lead in the 50th minute, as another rookie, Hannah Feneberg (Plaistow, N.H.), scored unassisted, her sixth score of the year. Senior Courtney Weaving (New Preston, Conn.) made it 4-0 with 12:00 left in the game, converting an assist by senior Erika Hansen (Marstons Mills, Mass.).
The Bobcats knocked on Babson's door all day, but they weren't able to find the back of the net until senior captain Sarah Merullo (Essex, Mass.) got by two Babson defenders to slam the ball into the corner with 16 seconds remaining in the game. Junior Riley Kundtz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) took a first-half shot that sailed just inches over the Babson goal.
Senior Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass.) also had a strong game in goal for Babson, making 10 saves in 58 minutes of work. Pashos made a diving stick save of a penalty stroke shot by Bates senior captain Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.). Sophomore Kayla Florence (Milton, Mass.) made one save in the final 11:14 in goal for Babson.
Otley finished with 15 saves in a busy day, while senior back Amanda Brusca (Prides Crossing, Mass.) made a defensive save as well.
Bates plays host to Hamilton on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 12 p.m., while Babson will host Connecticut College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
