Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—The Babson College women's field hockey team scored two goals in the first eight minutes of the game to help propel them to a 3-2 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at MacDowell Field. Sophomore Morgan Lockwood (Agawam, Mass.) led the way for the Beavers scoring a goal and adding two assists. First-years Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) and Hannah Feneberg (Timberlane, N.H.) added a goal apiece for Babson.
Lockwood got Babson on the board just 4:15 into the game, scoring her fourth goal of the season on an assist from midfielder Julia Pochini (Acton, Mass.). Following a penalty corner, Pochini settled the ball just inside the arc and fed Lockwood, who turned and blistered a hard shot inside the right post, beating Blue Jay goalkeeper Kim Stein (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Malone pushed the Babson advantage to 2-0 just over three minutes later at the 7:27 mark on her second goal of the season. Following a flurry of action in front of the cage, Lockwood gained possession and found Malone for the goal and a quick 2-0 lead.
The Blue Jays battled back though, and cut the Babson lead in half at the 28:22 mark when Maggie Phillips (Whitehall, Pa.) scored her fourth goal of the season. Midfielder Sarah Henderson (Rumson, N.J.) hit a hard shot outside the arc that was pushed away by Babson goalkeeper Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass.), but Phillips collected the rebound and tucked it inside the near post to get the Blue Jays on the board before halftime.
Babson re-opened a two goal lead just 3:22 after halftime when Feneberg collected a short pass from Lockwood and beat Stein (6 saves) to put the hosts ahead, 3-1. The Blue Jays again would rally, cutting the advantage to 3-2 when Liane Tellier (Cherry Hill, NJ) beat Pashos on a hard shot following a penalty corner at 53:02. Hopkins' best chance to tie the game came with just under six minutes to play as Carly Bianco (Montclair, N.J.) and Phillips missed opportunities to equalize from point blank range. Bianco broke in on the Babson net, but Pashos (13 saves) came off her line to make a diving stop, and after controlling the rebound, Phillips lifted her shot just over the cage as Babson preserved their slim lead.
Johns Hopkins (2-1) returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Cambridge to take on MIT in a 1:00pm start. Babson (3-1) will face their first road test of the season when they travel to Medford to take on nationally-ranked Tufts University on Tuesday afternoon in a 4:00pm contest.
