BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College men's
lacrosse team defeated visiting Wheaton College on Saturday
afternoon, 19-14, in a Pilgrim League matchup. The Beavers were led
by sophomore Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) who
tallied five goals and four assists for nine points on the day.
With the win, Babson improves to 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in
Pilgrim League play while Wheaton dips to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in
the Pilgrim League.
Also chipping in for Babson were senior Armand Wilson
(Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Cam Caruso (St.
Charles, Ill.) who both finished with three goals and one
assist while sophomore Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne,
Vt.) also added three goals. Following was senior
Andrew Packer (Hudson, Ohio) who scored two goals
and had one assist. Defensively the Beavers were led by first-year
Ryan Dawidjan (Worcester, Mass.) and Caruso who
both picked up a game high eight groundballs.
Wheaton was led by seniors Chris Landers (Manchester, Mass.) and
Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass,) who each scored four goals for the
Lyons. Sophomore defender Jack Croasdale (Manchester, N.H.) picked
up six groundballs while causing a game high four turnovers.
Wheaton took the early 2-0 lead receiving goals from first-year
Colby Sheilds (Yarmouth, Maine) and Landers. The Beavers answered
with two goals of their own from Caruso and Patinkin. Wheaton would
then score two of the next three goals to end the first quarter up
4-3.
Babson started the second quarter scoring four unanswered goals
and eventually outscored Wheaton, 9-4 in the second stanza to take
the 12-8 lead at the half. Seven different Beavers scored during
this run including three goals from Wilson.
In a third quarter that remained scoreless for the first seven
and a half minutes, Wheaton tacked on two goals just 95 second
apart to cut the lead to two, 12-10. Babson would then gain the
momentum back when Schmidt beat the clock for a goal in the final
second to make the score 13-10 in favor of the Beavers entering the
final period.
Back-to-back goals from Caruso and Schmidt to start the fourth
quarter would give Babson their second five-goal lead of the day,
15-10, with 8:47 left on the clock. The two teams then traded goals
and Wheaton's Conor Finn (Kennebunk, Maine) would add another
to cut the lead to four, 16-12 with 4:12 remaining. Patinkin then
went on a scoring frenzy tallying three goals in just a minute and
a half to give the Beavers their biggest lead of the day, 19-12,
with 1:02 left on the clock. Wheaton did not give up as Landers
chipped in two last goals in the final minute making the final
score, 19-14.
Babson will host Salve Regina on Wednesday at 4pm while Wheaton
will host Springfield next Saturday at 1pm.
