BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Thomas Cykana
(Minnetonka, Minn.) scored four goals and added an assist
for five points to lead Babson to a 14-5 victory over Massachusetts
Maritime in the Pilgrim Lacrosse League regular season finale for
both squads Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The visiting Beavers (9-7, 4-1 Pilgrim) overcame a 3-2 first
quarter deficit with a pair of tallies from Cykana and junior
Tom Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) in a 20 second span
to take a 4-3 advantage after the opening 15 minutes of play, as
that began a string of 12 unanswered Babson goals over a 44-minute
span. The Beavers extended their edge to 8-3 at the break and
added five more tallies in the third quarter, including a pair off
the stick of senior Armand Wilson (Fairfield,
Conn.), to take a 13-3 cushion into the final stanza and
claim second place in the final league standings.
Wilson finished with a hat trick and two assists for five points
in the triumph for Babson, which also received a tally and four
helpers off the stick of sophomore Alex Patinkin
(Providence, R.I.) as well as a pair of markers from
Mallon. Junior Cam Caruso (St. Charles,
Ill.) chipped in with a goal and two assists for the
winners, who also received a marker and helper from sophomore
Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) as well as single
goals off the sticks of senior Andrew Packer (Hudson,
Ohio) and sophomore Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne,
Vt.).
Senior Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) netted a pair of goals in
the setback for the host Buccaneers (4-13, 0-5 Pilgrim), who took a
pair of early one goal leads in the contest. Junior Will
Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) added a marker and a helper on the day
for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received tallies from junior
Matt White (Westwood, Mass.) and freshman Chris Bergau (Merritt
Island, Fla.). Senior Craig Nichols (Marshfield, Mass.)
chipped in with a pair of assists for the hosts, who also received
a helper from fellow senior Chris Davis (Cohasset, Mass.).
Sophomore Jay Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) picked
up the win in goal with six first half saves for Babson, while
fellow sophomore Ryan Lee (Wallingford, Conn.)
made one third quarter stop for the visitors. Freshman Jack
Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made 18 saves over the first three
quarters of play in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which
received five fourth quarter stops from fellow freshman Paul
Painten (Walpole, Mass.) as the Beavers outshot the Buccaneers by a
49-22 margin for the match.
Babson will host either MIT, Wheaton or Clark in semi-final
round play of the 2011 Pilgrim Lacrosse League Championships on
Wednesday in Babson Park, Mass.
