BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Babson College men's lacrosse team
scored 11 unanswered goals to overcome a four-goal first half
deficit as the Beavers claimed a 13-6 comeback win over visiting
Hartwick College in a non-conference matchup at MacDowell Field on
Saturday afternoon. With the win, Babson evened its record at 1-1
on the season, while the Hawks dipped to 1-1 after their first loss
of the spring.
Babson was led by senior captain Armand Wilson (Fairfield,
Conn.), who totaled three goals and two assists for five
points, and sophomore Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne,
Vt.), who added two goals and one assist. Sophomore
Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) also scored a
pair of goals, first-year Ryan Dawidjan (Worcester,
Mass.) picked up a team-high nine groudballs, and
sophomore goalie Jay Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made
10 saves in net.
For Hartwick, senior Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, N.Y.) totaled two
goals and two assists for four points , while first-year Phil
Shcaefer (Holbrook, N.Y.) added one goal and one assist. Sophomore
Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, N.Y.) went the distance in net for the
Hawks, finishing with 15 saves.
With the contest knotted at 2-2 late in the first quarter, Hartwick
rattled off four straight scores to build a 6-2 lead. Sophomore
Harry Hughes (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored the first off an Aitchison
feed with three minutes left in the first, and Aitchison, Schaefer,
and sophomore Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, N.Y.) each added scores
over the first 14 minutes of the second to provide the Hawks with a
four-goal cushion with 1:27 left in the half.
Babson's furious comeback began with 18 seconds left in the second
quarter, when Patinkin scored off a Wilson pass to cut the host's
deficit to three at the break. The Beavers then received five
unanswered goals from five different players in the third quarter
to move in front, 8-6. Senior captain Andrew Packer
(Hudson, Ohio) scored the first at 13:58, followed by
goals from junior Paul Grip (Shrewsbury, Mass.) at 11:47 and
Schmidt at 3:57. Patinkin scored his second of the game to give the
Beavers the lead at 0:51, and Wilson capped the quarter with a
score at 0:08.
The hosts continued to dominate in the fourth, netting five more
goals to extend their run to 11 unanswered tallies. The barrage
included two more scores from Wilson, another from Schmidt, and
single goals from junior Jeff MacCune (Braintree,
Mass.) and first-year Bobby MacCune (Braintree,
Mass.). That would be more than enough for Whalen and the
defense, as Babson held on for the 13-6 victory.
The Beavers will next host Eastern Connecticut State University
on Wednesday at 4pm.
