BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore Mike Griffin
(Duxbury, Mass.) and senior Armand Wilson
(Fairfield, Conn.) each scored in the final three and a
half minutes to help the Babson College men's lacrosse team
overcome a late deficit and defeat visiting Mount Ida College, 7-6,
in non-conference action at MacDowell Field on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Beavers improved to 3-4 on the spring, while the
Mustangs fell to 1-5.
After Babson sophomore Alex Patinkin (Providence,
R.I.) scored the first goal of the game at 13:48 of the
opening quarter, first-year Mike McStravock (Windham,
N.H.) and junior Cam Caruso (St. Charles,
Ill.) rattled off back-to-back scores just 29 seconds
apart to increase the Beavers' lead to 3-0 with 4:20
remaining in the first. Mount Ida would get one goal back when
senior Matt Savage (Peabody, Mass.) scored the first of his three
goals with 3:13 left, but sophomore Jamie Schmidt
(Shelburne, Vt.) answered with his first goal of the
contest with 3:09 remaining to give the hosts a 4-1 cushion after
one.
The Mustangs scored again midway through the second, as senior
Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, Conn.) struck off a pass from classmate
Dan Harrington (Westford, Mass.) at 7:31. Caruso then netted his
second goal of the afternoon at 5:49 to give Babson a 5-2 lead at
the break.
Mount Ida came storming back in the second half, as Savage and
sophomore Nick Yacuzzi (Worcester, Mass.) each scored twice during
a 4-0 run that encompassed the entire third quarter and the first
10 minutes of the fourth. However, with his team trailing for the
first time all game at 6-5, Griffin evened the score when he netted
his first of the game with 3:17 remaining in regulation. Wilson
then put Babson in front to stay, netting his first goal of the
contest and team-leading 14th of the season with 2:31 to go to make
it 7-6.
The Mustangs would have only one shot attempt the rest of the
way, with Babson sophomore Jay Whalen (Westwood,
Mass.) making his 14th save of the contest on the play.
The Beaver defense also received four groundballs apiece from
Griffin and Caruso as well as four caused turnovers from senior
Ryan Kucinski (Cohassett, Mass.).
Junior goalie James McAllister (Smithfield, R.I.) finished with
17 saves and six groundballs in net for Mount Ida.
