BOX SCORE

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) and senior Armand Wilson (Fairfield, Conn.) each scored in the final three and a half minutes to help the Babson College men's lacrosse team overcome a late deficit and defeat visiting Mount Ida College, 7-6, in non-conference action at MacDowell Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improved to 3-4 on the spring, while the Mustangs fell to 1-5.

After Babson sophomore Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) scored the first goal of the game at 13:48 of the opening quarter, first-year Mike McStravock (Windham, N.H.) and junior Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) rattled off back-to-back scores just 29 seconds apart to increase the Beavers' lead to 3-0 with 4:20 remaining in the first. Mount Ida would get one goal back when senior Matt Savage (Peabody, Mass.) scored the first of his three goals with 3:13 left, but sophomore Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.) answered with his first goal of the contest with 3:09 remaining to give the hosts a 4-1 cushion after one.

The Mustangs scored again midway through the second, as senior Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, Conn.) struck off a pass from classmate Dan Harrington (Westford, Mass.) at 7:31. Caruso then netted his second goal of the afternoon at 5:49 to give Babson a 5-2 lead at the break.

Mount Ida came storming back in the second half, as Savage and sophomore Nick Yacuzzi (Worcester, Mass.) each scored twice during a 4-0 run that encompassed the entire third quarter and the first 10 minutes of the fourth. However, with his team trailing for the first time all game at 6-5, Griffin evened the score when he netted his first of the game with 3:17 remaining in regulation. Wilson then put Babson in front to stay, netting his first goal of the contest and team-leading 14th of the season with 2:31 to go to make it 7-6.

The Mustangs would have only one shot attempt the rest of the way, with Babson sophomore Jay Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) making his 14th save of the contest on the play. The Beaver defense also received four groundballs apiece from Griffin and Caruso as well as four caused turnovers from senior Ryan Kucinski (Cohassett, Mass.).

Junior goalie James McAllister (Smithfield, R.I.) finished with 17 saves and six groundballs in net for Mount Ida.
