BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College men's soccer
team picked up its fourth shutout win of the season on Saturday, as
the Beavers blanked visiting UMass-Boston, 2-0, in a non-conference
contest at Hartwell-Rogers Field. With their second win in a row,
the Beavers improved to 4-1-0 on the season, while the Beacons fell
to 1-1-0 with their first loss.
After a scoreless first half, Babson grabbed a 1-0 lead early in
the second. Following a UMass-Boston foul on the left side of
Babson's offensive end, sophomore Josh Danesh
(Brookline, Mass.) sent the ensuing free kick into the
middle of the box. There, first-year Mike Fisher
(Longmeadow, Mass.) headed a perfect shot into the upper
left corner for his second goal of the season at 50:29.
The Beavers picked up a key insurance goal at the 62-minute
mark, as junior Jimmy Stento (Needham, Mass.) sent
a nice through-ball to junior Ryan Obolewicz (Bow,
N.H.) at the top of the box. A UMass-Boston defender raced
back and kicked the ball away from the Babson midfielder, but his
attempted clear went just inside the right post and in for an own
goal at 62:03.
That would be all Babson would need, as the Beaver defense
limited UMass-Boston to just two shots on net. Junior keeper
Peter Crowley (Lexington, Mass.) finished with two
saves in earning his third shutout of the season, while
Beacons' sophomore goalie Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, Mass.)
stopped seven shots in defeat.
On the ninth anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, 2001,
there was a brief ceremony in honor of Babson soccer alumnus
Erik “Izzy” Isbrandtsen '94
prior to the game. Isbrandtsen passed away during the
terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, and
in his honor several members of his family were in attendance on
Saturday. They were presented with flowers from Isbrandtsen's
teammate and friend Dave McEachern, as well as
current junior captains Clint Mason (Williamstown,
Mass.) and Max Walker (Newton,
Mass.).
Babson's practice field, located next to Hartwell-Rogers,
was renamed in Isbrandtsen's honor in 2001.
