BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior co-captain Sarah
Fredlund (New Preston, Conn.) scored two goals to become
just the fourth player in Babson College field hockey history to
reach the 100-point mark, as the Beavers defeated visiting Endicott
College, 5-2, in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday
night.
Entering her final collegiate season with 99 career points,
Fredlund joined Elise Conley '06, Andrea Tufts '07, and
former teammate Jess Paladino '10 as the only members of
Babson's 100-point club. She now boasts 43 goals and 17
assists for 103 points in her career, moving her into third place
in the program's all-time scoring list.
Along with Fredlund's two scores, Babson also received one
goal and two assists from junior Courtney Weaving (New
Preston, Conn.) and one goal and one assist from senior
co-captain Colleen Kelly (Milton, Mass.).
First-year Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass.)
added her first collegiate goal in the win, while junior goalie
Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass.) finished a
tremendous performance with 11 saves in net.
Endicott received goals from juniors Anna Giannoni (Granby,
Conn.) and Alexandra Parese (Wilton, Conn.), as well as five saves
from sophomore keeper Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.). The Gulls
outshot the Beavers 19-13 in the contest, but they were held
scoreless over the final 41 minutes of action.
Giannoni gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead when she took a
pass from sophomore Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) and buried a
reverse shot at 2:51. However, Fredlund quickly answered for
Babson, converting a cross from Weaving at 4:06.
Fredlund struck again at 13:53, this time off a Kelly pass to
put the Beavers in front 2-1. That lead lasted just under 12
minutes, however, as Parese knocked in a pass from senior Joanne
Reid (Clarksville, Md.) at 25:35.
Babson took the lead for good with just under seven minutes left
in the first half, as Weaving fed Lockwood on the left side during
a perfectly-executed 2-on-1 break. The rookie then one-timed a shot
into the open left side of the cage for the first goal of her
collegiate career at 28:10.
The second half would be all Babson, which scored two more goals
while limiting the Gulls to just four shots. Weaving made it a
two-goal game when she tipped in a rocket off the stick of
first-year Alex Cabreros (San Diego, Calif.) at
44:57. Kelly then punctuated the 5-2 victory with her first of the
season off a nice feed from first-year Julia Pochini
(Acton, Mass.) at 65:50.
The Beavers return to action on Tuesday, September 7, when they
host Eastern Connecticut State University at 6 p.m. Endicott
resumes play with another road came this Saturday, September 4, as
the Gulls travel to New Hampshire to face Plymouth State University
at 1 p.m.
