BOX SCORE
NEWTON, Mass. -- Babson College scored the first five goals of
the game and never looked back as the Beavers held on for a 10-7
victory over host Lasell College in a Pilgrim League men's lacrosse
matchup on Saturday afternoon. With its fourth win the last five
games, Babson improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference,
while the Lasers lost their fifth in a row to fall to 1-7 overall
and 0-1 in the Pilgrim League.
Sophomore Paul Grip (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led all
players with three goals in the win for the Beavers, while senior
Jon Standen (South Hadley, Mass.) added one goal
and two assists. First-year Alex Patinkin (Providence,
R.I.) chipped in with one goal and one assist for
Babson, and senior captain Mike Saucier (Nashua,
N.H.) finished a spectacular game in net with 11 saves and
a game-high nine groundballs.
Lasell was paced by Jon Elia and Brian Yepez, who recorded two
goals apiece. Nick Sampson picked up six groundballs in defeat for
the Lasers, and goalie Eric Walsh made 12 saves in net.
Babson dominated the first quarter, netting five straight goals
to build an early 5-0 lead. Five different players scored during
the barrage, while Standen dished out a pair of assists.
Elia scored for Lasell with 1:21 left in the opening quarter to
put his team on the board, but the Beavers scored the first two of
the second to push their lead to six at 7-1. The Lasers would get
two goals in the final five minutes, including a strike by Sam
Wilcox with just four seconds remaining, to cut their deficit to
7-3 at the half.
Grip and Standen both scored in the first eight minutes of the
third period, as Babson increased its lead to 9-4. Lasell would
scored the last goal of the third and the first of the fourth to
get to within three, but Patinkin gave the Beavers some breathing
room when he scored during a man-down to make it 10-6 with 11:02
left in the game. The Lasers managed one final goal by Dylan Gray
with 1:38 left, but it would not be enough to prevent the 10-7
Babson victory.
