BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College men's
lacrosse team defeated visiting MIT, 15-9 on Saturday afternoon in
a Pilgrim League contest at MacDowell Field. Nine different Beavers
scored in the win including first-year James Schmidt
(Shelburne, Vt.) who led all players with four goals and
one assist. With the win, Babson improves to 9-5 on the season and
4-1 in the Pilgrim League. MIT falls to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the
Pilgrim League.
The Beavers came out strong scoring the first four goals of the
game taking the early 4-0 lead with just over seven minutes
remaining in the first quarter receiving goals from sophomore
Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.), first-year
Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) and two from
Schmidt. MIT junior Dan Piemont (Summit, N.J.) put the Engineers on
the board at the 5:11 mark with a goal off a pass from teammate
Nick Sisler (Waterbury Center, Vt.). The two teams then traded
goals once more to end the quarter including a remarkable shot from
MIT goalkeeper Christopher Rullan (Wexford, Pa.) with one second
remaining from the MIT defensive end earning his first collegiate
point. Babson entered the first break with the 5-2 lead.
Babson scored four of the five second quarter goals including an
unassisted goal from senior Travis Clarke (Waltham,
Mass.) for his first of the season. Schmidt chipped in two
more goals during this span and Babson junior Armand Wilson
(Fairfield, Conn.) added one to give the Beavers the 9-3
advantage entering halftime.
The Beavers kept the six goal lead for the remainder of the game
not allowing MIT to get any closer en route to their 15-9 victory.
Along with Schmidt's four goals, Patinkin, Caruso and
sophomore Thomas Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) finished
with two goals each. Patinkin also chipped in with two assists.
Wilson, Clarke, junior Ryan Kucinski (Cohasset,
Mass.), sophomore Paul Grip (Shrewsbury,
Mass.), and junior Andrew Packer (Hudson,
Ohio) each finished with one goal apiece. Along with
Wilson's goal, he added three helpers and picked up five
groundballs. Defensively Babson was led by junior Christian
Ebert (Boxford, Mass.) who picked up a game high eight
groundballs and first-year Benjamin Jette (Old Lyme,
Conn.) who added five groundballs. First-year
Michael Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) won seven of nine
face-offs to lead all players.
Piemont and first-year Gabe Blanchet (Hadley, Mass.) each
tallied two goals for MIT. Rullan, junior Corey Garvey (Garden
City, N.Y.), sophomore Carl Tilbury (Newbury, Berkshire, U.K.),
senior Garth Grove (Jarrettsville, Md.) and junior John Kucharczyk
(Manhasset, N.Y.) each chipped in one goal apiece for the
Engineers. Junior Justin Myers (Highland Falls, N.Y.) led MIT with
four groundballs.
Babson's three goalkeepers all saw time in net with
senior Mike Saucier (Nashua, N.H.) earning the win
making four saves. First-year Ryan Lee (Wallingford,
Conn.) finished with four saves and no goals against in
just over ten minutes of play and first-year Jay Whalen
(Westwood, Mass.) had two saves. MIT goalkeeper Rullan
finished with 17 total saves playing all 60 minutes for the
Engineers.
MIT will next host Norwich University in a Pilgrim League
contest on Wednesday, April 28th at 4pm. Babson will continue
Pilgrim League play when they visit Clark University also on
Wednesday for a 7pm game.
