NEWTON, Mass. – The Babson College men's lacrosse
team defeated host Mount Ida College 10-5 in a non-conference game
on Wednesday afternoon. The Beavers scored the first seven goals of
the game giving the host Mustangs a large deficit to overcome early
in the contest. With the loss, Mount Ida falls to 6-4 on the season
and Babson improves to 6-5 overall.
The visitors started the game on a 7-0 run through the first half
with no answer offensively from the hosts on two goals from junior
Andrew Packer (Hudson, Ohio) and one a piece from
senior captain Max Artz (Gates Mills, Ohio),
sophomore's Scott Schachter (Rumford, R.I.)
and T.J. Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) and first-years
Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.) and Alex
Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) for a commanding
advantage.
Packer's second goal during the seven score stretch started
the third quarter but was immediately answered by the Mustangs on
two first-year Nick Yacuzzi (Oakham, Mass.) goals, one unassisted
and the other on a dish from junior Paul Battapaglia (Clinton,
Conn.) trailing 7-2.
Babson did not let up, scoring two consecutive unassisted goals
from sophomore Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) and
senior Jon Standen (South Hadley, Mass.) inflating
their advantage up 9-2 at the 6:16 mark in the third frame.
Mount Ida never backed down scoring two more goals, the first from
junior Dan Harrington (Westford, Mass.) on a feed from senior Chris
Prophete (Waltham, Mass.) and the second coming on Yacuzzi's
third goal of the day this time from sophomore Zach Jacobson
(Shoreview, Minn.) still behind 9-4 in the beginning of the fourth
quarter.
The squads exchanged goals to end the contest with Babson striking
first on another Artz goal from Caruso. Junior Matthew Savage
(Peabody, Mass.) scored the final tally of the game on a dish from
sophomore Derek O'Reilly (East Setuaket, N.Y.) giving the
Beavers a 10-5 non-conference victory.
Babson senior goaltender Mike Saucier (Nashua,
N.H.) had a brilliant day in net making 17 total saves and
picking up six groundballs. Mount Ida sophomore netminder Jimmy
McAllister (Smithfield, R.I.) also had a good game in goal denying
15 Beaver shots.
Artz and Packer finished with two goals each and Schmidt,
Patinkin, Caruso, Schachter, Standen, and Thomas Mallon
(Manhasset, N.Y.) each finished with one. Defensively the
Beavers were led by junior Christian Ebert (Boxford,
Mass.) who finished with eight groundballs.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they host
Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a 1pm Pilgrim League contest.
