BOX SCORE
BABSON PARK, Mass. – The visiting UMass Boston baseball
team scored 20 runs on 23 hits as they defeated the host Beavers on
Wednesday afternoon at Govoni field, 20-7. The Beacons were led by
senior Jeff Outzen (San Mateo, Calif.) who hit two home runs for
six RBI's on the day. With the loss, The Beavers dip to
18-9 overall and the Beacons improve to 14-9 on the season.
Babson got on the board first putting up one run in the first
inning when senior captain Peter O'Toole (Salem,
Mass.) hit a double to right field and eventually advanced
home on a ground out and a fly out.
The Beacons then kept Babson quiet for the next four innings and
were able to give themselves a 12-1 lead before the Beavers would
answer back. UMass Boston's first run came in the
second inning from junior catcher Tim Fontaine (Worcester, Mass.)
who doubled and was then brought home by a Dan Noonan (Westport,
Mass.) single. Senior Drew Tambling (Sterling, Mass.) then
singled in the third inning and advanced home on a stolen base and
a single from teammate Ryan Walsh (Newton, Mass.) to take the 2-1
lead entering the fourth inning.
Over the next three innings the Beacons would add ten more runs
receiving two hits each from sophomore Mark McCormack (Shelton,
Conn.), junior Ryan Walsh (Newton, Mass.) and Noonan who had a
double and a three run homer giving the Beacons the 12-1 lead
entering the Babson sixth inning.
The Beavers were able to get two more runs in the sixth when
O'Toole walked and sophomore Billy Miller (Sagamore
Beach, Mass.) then homered to right field making the score
12-3.
Babson would score an additional three runs in the seventh when
first-year Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) hit his
team high fifth homerun of the season bringing in teammates
Billy Besinger (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore
Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.).
This Babson offense was not enough as the Beacons kept the hits
coming scoring another eight runs in the final three innings on
their way to the 20-7 victory.
McCormack, Walsh, Fontaine and Noonan each finished with three
hits apiece for UMass Boston. Outzen finished with two homeruns off
the bench for six RBI's. Along with being the Beacons
designated hitter, Noonan also pitched a solid 5.1 innings only
allowing three hits and three runs with three strikeouts
earning the win and improving his season record to 1-1 on the mound
this season.

R.I.) pitched the first four innings for Babson
allowing nine hits and six runs facing 21 batters with two
