BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Babson College field hockey team
saw its magnificent 2010 season come to an end on Saturday, as the
Beavers fell to nationally-ranked Bowdoin College, 6-0, in the
second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament at
Bowdoin's Howard F. Ryan Field. With the win, the Polar Bears
(17-1), ranked fourth in the country by the NFHCA, advance to
Sunday's Sectional Final against either SUNY Cortland or
Lebanon Valley, while the Beavers end their year with a stellar
record of 16-6.
Bowdoin dominated from the start, scoring three unanswered goals
in the first half. Sophomore Kassey Matoin (Springvale, Maine)
scored the Polar Bears' first goal off a turnover deep in the
own zone at 4:58, senior Ingrid Oelschlager (Roanoke, Va.) netted
the second on a penalty stroke at 10:07, and sophomore Cathleen
Smith (Larchmont, N.Y.) tallied the third at 11:11.
Babson had its two best scoring chances late in the first half.
The first came when first-year Morgan Lockwood (Feeding
Hills, Mass.) found herself open on the left side on the
Beavers' first penalty corner of the game in the 19th minute,
but senior captain Colleen Kelly's (Milton,
Mass.) pass from the top of the circle deflected off her
stick and was cleared by a Bowdoin defender. Lockwood then posted
Babson's only shot of the game on another penalty corner with
five minutes left in the half, but Polar Bears' senior goalie
Emily Neilson (Chatham, Pa.) made her lone save of the contest to
keep the visitors off the board.
The Polar Bears continued to pour on the offense in the second
half, tacked on three more scores to complete the 6-0 win. Smith
scored her second of the game off an Oelschlager assist at 37:57,
Matoin tipped in a drive by junior Ella Curren (Roxbury, Conn.)
at 56:51, and senior Michaela Calnan (Melrose, Mass.) capped
off the Bowdoin victory when she converted a Matoin feed at
62:29.
Junior Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass.) went the
distance and finished with 14 saves in net for Babson, while
Neilson made the only save for Bowdoin before giving way to
sophomore Kayla Lessard (Enfield, Conn.) for the final 7:31.
This was Babson's second appearance in the NCAA
Tournament, as well as the second time the Beavers advanced as far
as the second round.
