Worcester, Mass. – On a night when the top two scorers in
the nation were on the field, it was Babson senior co-captain
Sarah Fredlund (New Preston, Conn.) who stole the
show with a second half hat trick, lifting the visiting Beavers to
a 4-1 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Tuesday
evening.
Clark sophomore Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) and Babson
first-year Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass.)
entered the matchup as the No. 1 and No. 2 scorers in the country
in terms of points per game. Melkonian averages 4.78 points per
game and Lockwood follows close behind with 4.22 points per
game.
The win for the Beavers pushes their record to 8-2 overall and 4-0
in league play and extends their win streak to six straight. The
Cougars, meanwhile fall to Babson for the seventh straight time and
slip to 6-4 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
After a scoreless first half, it was junior Courtney
Weaving (New Preston, Conn.) who got the Beavers on the
board first with help from senior co-captain Colleen
Kelly (Milton, Mass.) at 39:34.
Eight minutes later it was Fredlund rattling the back of the cage
and then less than two minutes later Fredlund was back at it again
on a feed from Kelly.
Down 3-0, Clark got on the board in spectacular fashion as
Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) set up Melkonian who beat Beaver
keeper Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass.) with a
diving goal at 57:26.
Any momentum the Cougars' got from Melkonian's 18th goal of the
season, was dashed when Fredlund notched her 12th tally of the
season at 61:43 to put the game away.
Pashos turned back six shots, while Clark netminder Kate McGrath
(Wilmington, Mass.) made nine stops.
The Cougars will look for their first NEWMAC win of the season on
Saturday when they host Smith on Saturday, while the Beavers, who
have outscored their opponents 27-7 during their six-game stretch,
will travel to Amherst for a meeting with the Lord Jeffs on
Thursday night at 7pm.
