BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior co-captain Colleen
Kelly (Milton, Mass.) had three first half assists to
break the all-time Babson record for assists in a career and
first-year Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass.)
scored five goals to set another Babson record as the Beavers
sailed to a 9-0 victory over visiting WPI on Saturday afternoon in
a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference
(NEWMAC) contest. With the win, Babson improves to 7-2 on the
season and remains undefeated in NEWMAC play at 3-0. WPI is now 4-6
on the year and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Lockwood scored her first of five goals just a minute into the
contest and went on the score three more in the half as the Beavers
took a solid 6-0 lead to enter the break. Babson never looked back
and went on to score an additional three goals in the second half
on their way to the 9-0 win.
The previous single-game record of four goals was held by Lockwood
herself along with two other individuals from years past. The
rookie scored four goals in the September 7th showdown against
Eastern Connecticut State University where she also broke the
record for most points in a game with 11. Lockwood, who is just
nine games into her collegiate career already holds two single-game
Babson records.
Kelly, a two-time All-New England player, assisted three of
Lockwood's first half goals which lifted her to ten assists
on the season bringing her career total to 35 and putting her on
top of the all-time Babson assist list. She surpasses Babson great
and two-time First Team All-American, Elise Conley '06, who
held the previous record at 33 assists.
Along with Lockwood's five goals, junior forward
Courtney Weaving (New Preston, Conn.) tallied two
goals and one assist while Kelly also added a goal of her own in
addition to her three assists. Sophomore Kelly Walsh
(Gardner, Mass.) added one goal and one assist and senior
co-captain Sarah Fredlund (New Preston, Conn.)
chipped in with three assists.
Junior goalkeeper Jess Pashos (Winchester,
Mass.) made one save in 48 minutes of play and first-year
Kayla Florence (Milton, Mass.) finished out the
game making three total saves. Sophomore Aly Caceres (Fall River,
Mass.) and first-year Liz Defresne (Worcester, Mass.) split the
time in net for WPI combining for seven saves. Junior
defender Katelyn Comeau (Goffstown, N.H.) also made a defensive
save for the Engineers.
Saturday was also Babson's third annual Play For the Cure game. As
a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month the Babson College field
hockey team accepted donations throughout the day to be given to
the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation. The team showed their
support by wearing pink tee-shirts during warm-up and the game was
played with a pink Play For the Cure ball.
Babson continues NEWMAC play on Tuesday evening when the visit
Clark for a 7pm game. WPI will host MIT also on Tuesday at 7pm.
