LEWISTON, Maine -- Babson College scored three goals in the opening
eight minutes and never looked back as the Beavers defeated host
Bates College in a non-conference field hockey game Sunday at
Campus Avenue Field.
Senior co-captain Jess Paladino (Turner, Maine)
paced Babson (3-1) with her second career seven-point game,
finishing with three goals and one assist. Sophomore
Courtney Weaving (New Preston, Conn.) added
two goals, while sophomore Anneliese Brosch (Essex,
Mass.), and first-year Kelly walsh (Gardner,
Mass.) each contributed assists.
After Paladino scored once and Weaving tallied twice in the first
7:18, Bates (0-2) closed the gap to 3-2 with goals by sophomore
Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) and senior Morgan Maciewicz
(Marblehead, Mass.). Dannis knocked in a rebounded save to make it
3-1, and Maciewicz blasted in a setup from junior Ann Wilson
(Chagrin Falls, Ohio) on a penalty corner to make it 3-2 in the
27th minute.
However, Paladino answered with back-to-back goals in the 46th and
51st minutes to seize a 5-2 lead. Bates increased its offensive
pressure over the course of the second half and closed the gap to
5-3 in the 66th minute, as first-year Laura Baran (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
set up first-year Mary Lewis (Gardiner, Maine) on a 2-on-0
breakaway.
Babson sophomore goalie Jessica Pashos (Winchester,
Mass.) made several great saves in the game, finishing
with six stops overall. Bates senior Helena Turner (Manchester,
Mass.) got the start in goal and played well for the Bobcats,
making eight saves.
Babson next plays at Tufts on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.; Bates plays at
NESCAC rival Bowdoin on Saturday at 11 a.m.
