BABSON PARK, Mass. - Sophomore Colleen Kelly (Milton, Mass.) scored
the eventual game-winning goal with 10 seconds left in the first
half as the Babson College field hockey team defeated visiting
Bridgewater State College, 2-0, in a non-conference contest at
MacDowell Field on Thursday evening. With the win, the Beavers
improved to 2-0 on the year, while Bridgewater State started out
0-1.
Babson controlled the first half of play, outshooting the
visitors by a count of 12-1. However, Bridgewater State
sophomore goalkeeper Katie Weber (Arlington, Mass.) made six saves
in the period to keep the Beavers off the board until just before
the break. On a Babson penalty corner, Kelly fired a shot that was
stopped by Weber. First-year Anneliese Brosch (Essex, Mass.)
followed up with another shot that was also denied, but Kelly
collected the rebound and slid it past Weber to give Babson a 1-0
cushion.
Things stayed that way until the closing moments of the contest,
when sophomore Sarah Fredlund (New Preston, Conn.) scored her
team-leading third goal of the season off another rebound with 2:14
left to play. Bridgewater State would not threaten in the final two
minutes as the Beavers came away with the 2-0 victory.
Weber finished with 10 saves in net for Bridgewater State,
including several key stops in the second half that kept her team
within striking distance. For Babson, first-year Jessica Pashos
(Winchester, Mass.) did not face a shot on net but did make a nice
clearing play on a potential breakaway with 19 minutes left in
regulation.
