BABSON PARK, Mass. - First-year Billy Nickerson
(Middleton, Mass.) and senior co-captain Tim Winn
(Sutton, Mass.) each scored goals to lead host Babson
College to a 2-0 victory over visiting UMass-Boston in a
non-conference men's soccer contest at Hartwell-Rogers Field on
Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers upped their season
mark to 4-2, while the Beacons slipped to 2-3.
After Babson put up two quick shots in the first seven minutes,
UMass-Boston grabbed the momentum by posting the next six attempts.
However, the Beavers' defense blocked three of the Beacon's bids
and first-year goalie Peter Crowley (Lexington,
Mass.) saved two more as the contest remained scoreless
through the first half.
In his first game back since suffering an injury in the season
opener, Nickerson gave the Beavers offense a much-needed spark
early in the second half, as he netted his second goal of the
season on a Babson corner kick. First-year Alejandro
Miro-Sans (Barcelona, Spain) sent the ball in from the
left corner to Winn, who headed a pass to Nickerson at the left
post. The rookie forward then headed a shot past UMass-Boston
sophomore keeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, Mass.) to
give the hosts a 1-0 advantage at 50:13.
The one-goal differential held until the 87-minute mark, when
the Beavers added an insurance goal for the eventual 2-0 victory.
Miro-Sans gathered the ball on the left side and sent a cross to
Winn, who headed a shot inside the left post for his team-leading
sixth goal of the season at 86:59.
Both goalkeepers were outstanding in their respective nets. For
Babson, Crowley turned away five shots to earn his second shutout
of the year, while Persuitte kept UMass-Boston in the game with
eight total saves, including three on clean breakaways.
