LEWISTON, Maine -
The Bates College field hockey team opened its 2007 season with a 3-1 victory against the visiting Babson College Beavers on Saturday, as senior midfielder Caitlin Tamposi and junior forward Emily Sampson each notched a goal and an assist in the winning effort.
Bates scored first 18 minutes into the game when Sampson was initially denied on her first shot from the top of the circle. However, the ball rebounded to Tamposi on the right side, where she collected it and crossed it to a charging Sampson, who hammered it into the back of the goal cage.
Babson (0-4) answered with just 37.8 seconds remaining in the first half, when a hard shot from first-year Sarah Fredlund outside of the circle was tipped by fellow rookie Erin Campbell past Bates goaltender Helena Turner.
Tied 1-1 at the half, the Bobcats looked to clean up their play and put more pressure on Babson's defense. In the first half the Bobcats were outshot 19-8, but Turner made several impressive saves to keep the game tied. Turner would finish with 13 starts in her first start.
Twenty minutes through the second half, Bates went ahead for good on a goal off of a penalty corner. Sophomore defender Sammy Rothkopf ripped a direct shot on goal where Babson senior tri-captain Michele Farley made an extraordinary defensive save. However, the rebound was again collected by Tamposi, who this time slammed it home herself to put the Bobcats up 2-1.
With five minutes left, Bates added an insurance goal from junior forward Abby Childs. Sampson received a leading pass from junior forward Rachel Greenwood up the right side of the field and hit a hard cross ball that Childs redirected into the cage.
Sophomore goalie Emily Cohen finished with four saves in net for Babson, while Farley and junior Nicole Cemelli chipped in with one defensive save apiece. The Beavers return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Simmons for a 7 p.m. matchup.
