NEWPORT, R.I. — The Babson College women's tennis team got its dual match season off to a strong start as five players won in both singles and doubles on the way to a 6-1 victory over Salve Regina University in the New England England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener Saturday at the Salve Regina Tennis Courts.
The Beavers begin the season with a 1-0 record both overall and in conference play while Salve Regina is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.
The Green and White swept the doubles point with three 6-0 victories. Sophomore
Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) and senior
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) were winners in the top flight, junior
Sarai Dorismond (Carlsbad, Calif.) and first-year
Vanessa Vu (Boston, Mass.) swept the second flight, and senior
Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and sophomore
Manuela Moscoso (Quito, Ecuador) cruised to a victory at number three.
Sikharulidze earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number one singles for the Beavers, and Dorismond won at number two, 6-2, 6-2. Vu captured the number three singles match, 6-2, 6-0, Kamal won 6-2, 6-2 at number four, and Moscoso took a 6-1, 6-1 decision at number six.
First-year Tiffany Gomez (Harwich, Mass.) was the lone winner for the Seahawks, taking down Soffer, 6-4, 6-1.
The Beavers will return to action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships on October 2-4 in Brunswick, Maine.
