BRUNSWICK, Maine—Junior
Camila Amaya (Singer Island, Fla.) matched the low round of her career with a 1-under 72 as the Babson College women's golf team sits in a tie for third place after day one of the Polar Bear Shootout at Brunswick Golf Club.
The Beavers posted a score of 6-over 298, which is their best in seven rounds at Brunswick GC and tied for the third-lowest in program history, leaving them just two shots off the lead. Hamilton leads a tightly packed leaderboard at 4-over, Middlebury is a shot behind them at 5-over and Bowdoin and Williams are tied for third with Babson. Amherst and Wellesley both finished round one at 8-over and are just four strokes back.
Amaya made three birdies and played her final 10 holes in 2-under to finish the day in a tie for sixth place. She was one of eight players to finish under par in Saturday's first round and is currently three shots behind Amanda Phillips of Wesleyan, who fired a 4-under 69.
Starting on the 10th hole, first-year
Anita Wang (Phoenix, Ariz.) made two birdies and two bogeys over her first five holes and responded to bogeys at No. 17 and No. 2 with birdies at the par-5 sixth and the par-5 ninth to grab a share of ninth place with an even-par 73.
Sophomore
Katie Yang (Orlando, Fla.) played her first 12 holes at 1-under par and bounced back from a trio of bogeys with her second birdie of the day at No. 9 on the way to posting a 2-over 75 that has her tied for 17th place. Sophomore
Francesca Choquette (New York, N.Y.) was even through her first eight holes after birdieing the par-5 16th but carded five bogeys on her inward nine and is tied for 37th position at 5-over after shooting a 78.
Sophomore
Vanya Bansal (Noida, India) played her final 13 holes in 1-over following a tough start and carded a 6-over 79 that has her tied for 45th place. Senior
Laura Lu (Chengdu, China), who is competing as an individual, made a pair of birdies and finished in a tie for 55th at 7-over after shooting an 80.
Final round play at Brunswick GC is set to begin at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
• Babson's score of 298 matches its final round of the 2024 Polar Bear Shootout for the best score at Brunswick GC, and is also tied for the fourth third lowest in program history behind its rounds of 288 and 295 at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate on April 5-6, 2024.
• Amaya, who is now the only Babson player to post multiple rounds under par in program history, boasts a 74.8 average in five rounds at Brunswick GC.
• The Beavers led the 14-team field with 57 pars and tied for first in par-3 scoring at 3-over, in addition to finishing fourth in par-5 scoring at 3-under in Saturday's first round.
