BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore
Graydon Vyse (Glastonbury, Conn.) pitched six strong innings and Babson College scored twice in the bottom of the first on the way to defeating No. 22 ABCA Tufts University, 2-1, in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its third straight win, Babson improves to 14-11 on the season. Tufts has dropped three of its last four contests to dip to 18-8 overall.
Vyse, who was making the first start of his career, struck out four and allowed just one unearned run and two hits to pick up his first collegiate win on the mound, while junior
Jason Finkelstein (Walpole, Mass.) needed just nine pitches to retire the side in order in the ninth to earn his first save of the year. First-year
Bobby Christensen (Scotch Plains, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, junior
Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) singled twice and graduate student
Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) added an RBI single and a run scored the Beavers.
Sophomores James Henshon (Wellesley, Mass.) and Jack Kamin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) both singled for the Jumbos, who were limited to a season-low two hits in the loss. Classmate Lachlan Ellis (Redding, Conn.) was tagged with the loss to drop to 1-2 on the season after giving up two runs on three hits over two innings of work.
The Green and White wasted little time getting on the board as sophomore
Ben Valente (Newton, Mass.) drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before coming home on Grace's single back up the middle. Liss followed with another base hit and Christensen then sliced a double down the left field line to bring home Grace for a 2-0 lead.
Vyse retired seven consecutive batters after giving up a two-out single to Henshon in the third before Tufts took advantage of two errors to cut its deficit in half on Kamin's RBI single in the top of the sixth. Vyse got out of the inning with a double play, senior
James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) punched out pinch-hitter Cole Bohane (Hingham, Mass.) with the potential tying run on first in the seventh, and first-year
Bourke Reid (Ramsey, N.J.) got Henshon to ground into another double play to end the eighth Babson.
Liss and Christensen both singled and got into scoring position with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth, but the Beavers were unable to extend their lead. Finkelstein shut the door in the ninth though, getting up pop up to second, a ground ball to shortstop and a sharp line drive to right.
Babson is back in action on Thursday when it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m., while Tufts travels to Bates for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
