Mason Nguyen (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) all recorded wins in both singles and doubles to help No. 15 Babson College defeat the Coast Guard Academy, 5-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
Babson, which has won three straight and six of its last seven matches, improves to 14-4 overall and 6-0 in conference play while securing at least a share of its second consecutive NEWMAC regular season title. Coast Guard has dropped its last three matches to slip to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Bourn and Mejia defeated junior Ben Bonetto (Bend, Ore.) and senior Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.) of Coast Guard in a tie breaker at number one, 7-6 (7-4), and Nguyen paired with sophomore
Sebastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla.) for a 6-2 victory at number two to help the Beavers secure the doubles point.
The Green and White won all four of its singles matches in straight sets while dropping a pair of three-set decisions. Nguyen was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at number two, Bourn posted a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at number three, Mejia cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory at number three and graduate student
Ryan Patrick (Darien, Conn.) blanked Bears' senior Logan Kwon (University Place, Wash.) 6-0, 6-0 at number five.
Bonetto outlasted Mendoza 6-3, 1-6, 10-7 at number one and first-year Lucas Peltier-Salazar (Newhall, Calif.) rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory at number six for Coast Guard.
Babson returns to action on Thursday when it hosts No. 19 Brandeis at 3:30 p.m., while Coast Guard concludes its season by hosting Wheaton on Saturday at 1 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers are 27-7 against Coast Guard since 2001 and have won 19 of the last 20 matches between the teams.
• Babson has won its last 15 matches versus conference foes and secured at least a share of its third NEWMAC regular season title since 2023 and fourth in the last six years going back to 2021.
