No. 6/6 Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down Salve Regina, 16-6

MIDDLETOWN, R.I.—Senior Braden Reilly (Reading, Mass.) finished with three goals and two assists for a game-high five points and sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Almquist (Wakefield, Mass.) finished with save as No. 6 USILA/No. 6 USA Lacrosse Babson College defeated Salve Regina University, 16-5, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday night at Gaudet Field. 

Babson, which rebounded from its first loss of the season on Tuesday night to No. 2/2 Bowdoin, improves to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in league play with the victory. Salve Regina has dropped back-to-back games to slip to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC. 

Graduate student Joey Allen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Chase Wightman (Little Compton, R.I.) both recorded two goals and one assist, while seniors Luke D'Orsi (Jamestown, R.I.) and Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) contributed a goal and two assists for the Beavers, who had eight players register a goal and 14 finish with at least one point in the rout. Graduate student Patrick McAleavey (Trumbull, Conn.) scored twice, classmate Beau Burns (Washington, D.C.) won 11-of-14 face-offs and scooped up nine ground balls, and juniors Ellis McDonald (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) and Ryan St. Onge (Avon, Conn.) both had two caused turnovers in the win. 

Senior Daniel Naglieri (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists for four points and Chris Koltzan () added two goals and one assist to pace the Seahawks. Junior William Frazier (Hanson, Mass.) led all players with three ground balls and classmate Griffin Caiozzo (Lunenburg, Mass.) made 15 saves in a losing effort. 

With the game tied at one late in the first quarter, the Green and White scored seven consecutive goals over a stretch of more than 19 minutes to build an 8-2 lead at the break. Allen got the run started with a man-up tally at the 4:13 mark of the first and McAleavey and junior Bruno Batty (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) scored 36 seconds apart to make it 4-1 with 2:36 left in the opening stanza. 

Senior Jack Feeks (Georgetown, Mass.) scored 85 seconds into the second quarter, Allen buried a feed from sophomore Andrew Berardi (Orleans, Mass.) for his second goal of the game at the 9:54 mark, and Reilly and junior Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored 31 seconds apart extending the margin to 8-1 with 4:17 to go in the period. Naglieri beat the first-half buzzer with his second goal of the game to stop the run for the Seahawks, but Babson responded with eight third-quarter markers to put the game away. 

Reilly scored and assisted on McAleavey's second goal around a tally by junior Rowan Mondello (Wakefield, Mass.) to make it 11-2 just over five minutes into the third. Wightman followed another goal by Reilly with back-to-back markers midway through the stanza and D'Orsi and sophomore Jake Murray (Riverside, R.I.) scored 58 seconds apart to give the Beavers their largest lead of the night at 16-4 with 1:01 to go in the period. 

The Beavers finished with the edge in shots (48-43) and face-offs (15-9) and was successful on 28-of-30 clears. The Seahawks held a slim 26-25 edge in ground balls and was successful on 21-of-22 clears. 

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to UMass Boston at 7 p.m., while Salve Regina hosts Clark next Saturday at 2 p.m. 

GAME NOTES
•    The Beavers are now 5-1 all-time against Salve Regina and have won four straight games in the series since 2010.
•    Rooney extend his points streak to 29 games with a second-quarter goal, while Smith passed former teammate Topher Bower '24 M'25 for third place on the program's all-time list with his 92 career assists. 
•    Almquist's 20 saves are one shy of his career high of 21 in the Beavers' 16-12 triumph over then-fourth-ranked RIT back on February 28. 
•    Babson is now 8-0 this season 44-2 over the last four seasons when scoring 14 or more goals.
