BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomores
Ben Valente (Newton, Mass.) and
Brooks Saft (New Hope, Pa.) both doubled and homered while combining to drive in eight runs as Babson College defeated visiting Suffolk University 12-1 in seven innings on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
Babson has won three of its last four games to improve to 5-7 on the year, while Suffolk has dropped four straight outings to slip to 1-12 overall.
Saft was 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored and Valente went 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI and two runs scored as six of the Beavers' 12 hits went for extra-bases. First-year
Bobby Christensen (Scotch Plains, N.J.) singled twice, knocked in a run and scored twice, while graduate student
Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) added two hits in the win.
Senior
James Clark (Westborough, Mass.) improved to 2-2 with the win after striking out three and allowing one run over three innings. Junior
Tristan Pearl (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded four strikeouts in three innings of relief, while classmate
Brennan Shapiro (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) retired the side in order in the top of the seventh.
Senior Colin Flynn (Dorchester, Mass.) singled and scored a run and first-year Luke Thornton (Berkley, Mass.) recorded a double for the Rams, who had just five hits. Senior Colin McNeal (Los Angeles, Calif.) fell to 0-3 on the year with the loss after giving up 10 runs on 10 hits and four walks over four innings.
Flynn led off the game with a single and scored on an error in the top of the first before the Green and White responded with 12 unanswered runs. Christensen tied the game with a two-out singled down the left field line to bring home sophomore
Dylan Drazka (Rye Brooke, N.Y.) and the Beavers took the lead for good with a four-run third.
Saft ripped a double down the line in left to bring home Christensen and junior
Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) for a 3-1 advantage, sophomore
Gabe Cushner (Harrington Park, N.J.) followed with an RBI double off the wall in right center and senior
Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made it 5-1 with a two-out single through the right side. Babson continued its onslaught in the fifth as Valente hit a two-run shot off the scoreboard beyond the left field fence, which was followed by Saft's three-run blast to left center that extended the lead to 10-1.
Junior
Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) walked to lead off the fifth and came around to score when Valente laced a double to left center two batters later. He then scored when senior
Ryan Hvozdovic's (Hillsborough, N.J.) flare into left landed fair stretching the margin to 12-1.
Both teams are back in action on Thursday as Babson hosts Roger Williams at 3:30 p.m., while Suffolk visits UMass Dartmouth at 3 p.m.
