Baseball Pulls Away from Roger Williams, 12-6

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) went 2-for-5 and drove in a career-high five runs and Babson College scored in each of the first six innings on the way to defeating visiting Roger Williams University, 12-6, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field.

Babson, which has won four of its last five games, improves to 6-7 on the year. Roger Williams has dropped its last three outings to slip to 6-7 overall.

First-year Bobby Christensen (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was 2-for-5 with an RBI, senior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) doubled and knocked in two runs, and graduate student Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) and sophomore Ben Valente (Newton, Mass.) both doubled and scored twice as eight different players recorded a hit for the Beavers. First-year Bourke Reid (Ramsey, N.J.) picked up the win in his collegiate debut with 2.2 shutout innings that included a pair of strikeouts.

Junior Jack Tubman (Bellingham, Mass.) was 3-for-5 with a grand slam, sophomore Sam Arcieri (Westwood, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and junior Danny Powers (Mansfield, Mass.) hit a pinch hit homer in the eighth inning for the Hawks. Senior Griffin Ruffner (Exeter, N.H.) also singled twice in the defeat.

The Green and White used a bases loaded walk by junior Cameron Grindle (Mansfield, Mass.) in the first and an RBI double by Teator in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Arcieri homered to right center with one out in the top of the third, but Christensen answered with an RBI single to right in the bottom of the frame and D'Avanzo and sophomore Dylan Drazka (Rye Brook, N.Y.) followed with back-to-back RBI knocks in the fourth, extending the Beavers' advantage to 5-1.

Roger Williams got right back into the game in the fifth as the first three batters reached thanks to a pair of hit batsmen and a fielder's choice before Tubman hit the first pitch he saw over the fence in center for his first career grand slam to make it 5-5. Reid recorded a punch out with runners on second and third to end the inning and the Beavers pushed across a pair of runs on a throwing error with the Hawks trying to turn a double play in the bottom of the inning to go back in front for good.

Reid retired the side in order in sixth and the Green and White put the game away with five runs in its half of the inning. Junior Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) ripped a pinch-hit single down the right field line to bring home Valente to make it 8-5, Teator drew a bases-loaded walk and D'Avanzo smashed a double to left center that brought home three more runs pushing the margin to 12-5.

Hugh Cyhowski (Erving, Mass.) shouldered the loss for the Hawks after allowing two runs, one of them earned, while allowing a hit and walking three in 0.2 innings.

Both teams are set for doubleheaders on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. as Babson travels to Coast Guard while Roger Williams hosts Nichols.
