BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Robbie Lamond (North Kingstown, R.I.) and senior Collin Reilly (Marshfield, Mass.) each drove in three runs and four Wheaton College relievers combined to give up just one run over the final six innings as visiting Wheaton College defeated Babson College, 10-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
Babson, which had its two-game winning streak snapped, drops to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in league play. Wheaton has won three of its last four outings to improve to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.
First-year
Bobby Christensen (Scotch Plains, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a walk, junior
Connor Frickey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored and sophomore
Ben Valente (Newton, Mass.) doubled and knocked in a pair of runs for the Beavers, who had seven players record a hit. Junior
Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) also had an RBI double in the loss.
Lamond finished 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored, while senior Ray Toth (Granby, Mass.) and classmate Marcus Rodrigues (Lincoln, R.I.) both singled twice for the Lyons. The trio of senior Evan Mello (New Bedford, Mass.), who picked up his first win of the season, classmate Ben Oliveira (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Braden Young (Foxborough, Mass.) did not allow a hit over five shutout innings of relief.
Wheaton jumped in front in the top of the third scoring three times despite the benefit of just one hit. Reilly was plunked with the bases loaded to push across the opening run, sophomore Declan Rush (Seekonk, Mass.) grounded into a double play to plate Rodrigues and first-year Brayden Lewis (Hopedale, Mass.) capped the rally by singling through the left side to score Lamond.
Reilly smoked a two-run double to right center with one out in the fourth and late scored on an RBI ground out by Lewis to give the Lyons extended their lead to 6-0. The Green and White answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame as Liss ripped a double down the right field line that brought home Frickey, while Valente followed with a two-run double to deep right center to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Mello escaped further damage in the fourth by inducing a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded and got another inning-ending double play to erase back-to-back walks in the bottom of the fifth. Oliveira retired six of the seven batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings, and Wheaton tacked on three insurance runs late as Lamond came through with a two-run single to make it 9-3 in the seventh and hit a solo homer to left in the ninth.
Junior
Jason Finkelstein (Walpole, Mass.) suffered the loss on the hill for the Beavers to fall to 0-2. He allowed five earned runs on three hits while striking out two over 3.1 innings.
Babson is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Suffolk at 3:30 p.m., while Wheaton travels to Rhode Island College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
