Katie Yang (Orlando, Fla.) all shot 78 to help the Babson College women's golf team end the opening round of the Jekyll Island Invitational in 11th place on Friday at the Great Dunes Course.
The Beavers posted a score of 25-over 313 to finish one shot ahead of eighth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. No. 1 Emory came in first at 7-over 295, No. Carnegie Mellon sits in second place at 13-over 301 and No. 6 Amherst (302), No. 3 NYU (305) and No. 11 Washington & Lee (306) round out the top five after round one.
Yang made three birdies and Pan made two as both players finished in a tie for 29th place alongside Lu at 6-over after opening with rounds of 78. First-year
Vanya Bansal (Noida, India) carded three birdies on the way to carding a 7-over 79 and is tied for 40th place, while sophomore
Hannah McCarthy (Toronto, Ontario) also made three birdies in a first round 82 that has her tied for 74th position at 10-over.
In addition to competing at Great Dunes, Babson also had two players taking part in the Indian Mound Invitational at Jekyll Island Golf Club. Sophomore
Camila Amaya (Singer Island, Fla.) is tied for fourth place after shooting a 7-over 79 on Friday, while classmate
Molly McCarthy (Toronto, Ontario) posted a 9-over 81 and is tied for ninth.
Babson begins second round play at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
• The average score in Friday's first round at Great Dunes was 81.38.
• The Beavers tied for fifth place in the field in par 4 scoring at 17-over and also were fifth in the field with 11 birdies in round one.
• Pan tied for sixth in round one in par 4 scoring at 1-over.
