AUBURNDALE, Fla.— Senior Vincent Napolitano (Merrick, N.Y.) hit a three-run double to highlight an eight-run sixth inning as the University of Scranton rallied from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Babson College, 10-8, in a rain-shortened eight-inning baseball game on Monday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
Babson dropped its second straight weather-shortened contest in a row and fell to 2-5 on the season, while Scranton won its fifth straight contest to improve to 9-3.
Graduate student
Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) belted a three-run home run and finished with four RBI for the Beavers. Junior
Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) reached base four times with two hits and two walks and juniors
Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) and
Jack Moses (Belle Mead, N.J.) each knocked in runs for the Beavers.
Seniors Conor Campbell (Wilmington, Del.) and John Heitzman (Fairfield, Ct.) each had two hits and an RBI for the Royals and junior James Nitti (Freehold, N.J.) had a pair of knocks. Sophomore Matthew Gannon (Jamison, Pa.) also drove in a run and scored a run in the win.
The Green and White loaded the bases and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and scored five runs in the second around a rain delay to break the game open. D'Avanzo brought home junior
Ian Laforest (Waltham, Mass.) with a sacrifice fly before the delay, senior
Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) scored on a failed pickoff attempt before a pitch was thrown following the delay and Grace smacked a three-run homer to left to make it 6-0.
Babson took advantage of a pair of walks leading to first-year
Wyatt Miller (Cohasset, Mass.) scoring on an RBI ground out by Grace extending the margin to 7-0 in the fourth before Scranton erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. The Royals started the inning with three straight hits, including an RBI double by Campbell and a run-scoring single by Heitzman to pull within 7-2, which was followed by Napolitano's bases-clearing double that cut the deficit to 7-5.
Napolitano and first-year Jack Portman (Kinnelon, N.J.), who doubled, both scored on errors and Gannon flied out to deep center bringing home senior Casey (Silver Beach, N.J.) to put Scranton in front 8-7.
The Beavers came back to tie the game with a single by junior
Connor Frickey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and three hit-by-pitches to sophomore
Dylan Drazka (Rye Brook, N.Y.), Hvozdovic and Moses, but left the bases loaded. The Royals answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs scoring on a wild pitch and a balk.
Scranton used a parade of seven pitchers with senior Ryan Boyd (Millwood, N.Y.) getting the win in relief while Babson used six players on the mound with graduate student
Cal Place (Needham, Mass.) taking the loss in his season debut.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson takes on No. 3/4 Johns Hopkins at 10 a.m. while Scranton faces Franklin & Marshall at 3:30 p.m.
