Baseball Drops Weather-Shortened Affair with Amherst, 5-2

AUBURNDALE, Fla.—Sophomore Aiden Dubetsky (Frederick, Md.) went 2-for-4 with a double and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth as Amherst College defeated Babson College, 5-2, in a game shortened to six innings because of lightning on Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.

Babson has split its last four games and is 2-4 overall on the year, while Amherst improves to 4-1.

Graduate student Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) went 2-for-3, junior Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) had an RBI double and classmates Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) and Ian Laforest (Waltham, Mass.) each added a single. Senior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) walked twice and scored a run, while classmate James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) dropped to 0-2 on the year with the loss after striking out three and giving up two earned runs over four innings.

Sophomore JJ Grimes (Larchmont, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with a double in support of classmate Nick Fasserst (Katonah, N.Y.), who struck out five and gave up just two hits over four innings. First-year Saahi Jetti (Des Moines, Iowa) gave up two runs on three hits over two innings out of the bullpen and improved to 2-0 with the win for the Mammoths.

Neither pitcher allowed a hit over the first two frames and the game remained scoreless until first-year Jack Darcy (Milton, Mass.) drove in sophomore Justin Orridge (Toronto, Ontario) with a one-out single to right and then scored on an RBI ground out by first-year Zander Carnahan (Fishers, Ind.) to put Amherst in front 2-0. The Green and White answered back in the top of the fifth though, as D'Avanzo ripped a double down the left field line to plate Teator and sophomore Dylan Drazka (Rye Brook, N.Y.) followed with a ground out to second to score Laforest to make it 2-2.

The Mammoths went back on top in the fifth as Dubetsky led off with a double and scored from second when sophomore Leo Foust (Baltimore, Md.) reached on an error. Foust later scored on a two-out single by junior Charlie LaFreniere (Norwalk, Conn.) for a 4-2 lead. Jetti worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout and a pop up in the top of the sixth and Amherst tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning before the game was halted and later called due to lightning in the area.

Babson returns to action on Monday against Scranton at 1:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park, while Amherst takes on Wisconsin-La Crosse on Monday at 6:15 p.m. in Davenport, Fla.
