Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Helps Baseball Beat No. 1/6 Trinity in Series Finale, 6-5

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—Graduate student Joe Carrea (Cranford, N.J.) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning and senior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) recorded a game-ending strikeout with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to help visiting Babson College defeat No. 1 D3baseball.com/No. 6 ABCA Trinity University, 6-5, to conclude a three-game series on Sunday afternoon.

Babson, which dropped the first two games, improves to 1-2 on the year with the victory. Trinity had its five-game winning streak snapped and is now 5-2 on the season.

Senior Owen Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) and first-year Robert Christensen (Scotch Plains, N.J.) each had two hits and graduate student Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) singled and drove in a pair of runs for the Beavers. Teator went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk at the plate and picked up his first save of the year in relief of sophomore Chase Burrows (Cream Ridge, N.J.), who earned the win after striking out three and giving up three earned runs over 5.2 innings.

Junior Mattias Rytting (Houston, Texas) went 3-for-4 with a double and graduate student Michael Lustina (Austin, Texas) and sophomores Grant Anderson (Austin, Texas) and John Ramsey (Austin, Texas) each finished with two hits apiece for the Tigers. Junior Callen Singhania (Dallas, Texas) was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored in the loss.

Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by sophomore Evan Kuhl (Boerne, Texas) and a sacrifice fly by Singhania before the Green and White responded with four runs in the top of the third. Grace laced a bases-loaded single to left to bring home Ben Valente (Newton, Mass.) and Teator, sophomore Gabe Cushner (Harrington Park, N.J.) scored on a balk and classmate Dylan Drazka (Rye Brook, N.Y.) came through with a two-out base hit to center to plate Grace for a 4-2 advantage.

The Tigers answered back in the fourth with a pair of two-out runs as Singhania singled to center to bring home Rytting and late scored on knock by Anderson to make it 4-4. Babson went back in front for good in the top of the sixth though, as Stephens led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Valente before coming home on Teator's RBI double to left.

Carrea relieved Burrows with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth and struck out junior Pierce Matthews (Carrollton, Texas) to escape the jam, and then retired three straight batters in the seventh after giving up back-to-back singles to start the frame. Teator entered in the and survived four walks by striking out the side, including Anderson, with two outs and the bases loaded to end the game.

Junior Brandon Morio (Austin, Texas), one of seven pitchers used on Sunday by Trinity, slipped to 0-1 with the loss after allowing one run on four hits while fanning four in 3.1 innings.

Babson is off until March 13 when it plays the first of seven games in central Florida against Bowdoin at 3:30 p.m. Trinity travels to Texas Lutheran on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
