BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half to lead three players in double figures as Babson College pulled away to defeat visiting Springfield College, 71-56, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.
Babson, which has won nine of its last 10 contests, improves to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in conference play. Springfield has dropped two straight games to slip to 8-14 overall and 6-7 in the NEWMAC.
Ferdinando and sophomore
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.), who scored 14 points, both knocked down four three-pointers to pace the Beavers. Senior
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) contributed 11 points and six rebounds, while classmate
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) led all players with four steals and two blocked shots to go along with seven points in the win.
Sophomore Zachary Campbell (Philadelphia, Pa.) led all players with 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor to lead the Pride.
The Green and White led for nearly all of the final 38 minutes although never by more than seven before going on a 22-7 run midway through the second half. Campbell got Springfield within 37-35 by converting a three-point play with 14:36 remaining, but Mulvey answered with back-to-back triples and sophomore
Ryan Frauenheim (Manasquan, N.J.) followed a transition layup by classmate
Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) with another trifecta to extend the Beavers' lead to 48-39 with 9:55 to play.
Ferdinando scored seven points over three straight possessions to give the hosts their first double-digit advantage, and he and Lauder both went 2-of-2 at the charity stripe to give Babson a 59-42 cushion with 5:22 left. Ferdinando answered two free throws by Campbell with his fourth three-pointer of the game and Frauenheim gave the Beavers their largest lead by converting three foul shots to make it 66-48 with 3:52 remaining.
The teams were separated by no more than five points until Lauder scored in the paint to give Babson a 25-19 edge with 5:03 to go until halftime. Muvley and Ferdinando both hit late three-pointers and the Green and White limited Springfield to just one field goal over the final seven minutes of the stanza to take a 31-24 advantage into the locker room.
The Beavers shot just 40 percent but made 10 three-pointers and turned 21 turnovers by the Pride into 20 points. Springfield shot 40.9 percent from the floor and outscored the Green and White 34-24 in the paint but failed to make a three-pointer for the first time since February 22 of last year in the loss.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson travels to Emerson at 7:30 p.m. while Springfield meets Salve Regina at 7 p.m.
