Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) scored a team-high 17 points and senior
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) registered his first double-double of the season with a career-high 13 points and 10 rebounds and all five starters scored in double figures as Babson College rolled past Emerson College, 82-68, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball game Wednesday evening on Hank Smith Court inside Brown and Plofker Gym.
With the victory, the Beavers have won four in a row and 10 of their last 11 games to up their record to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the NEWMAC. Emerson has dropped two straight and eight of its last nine to dip to 8-14 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
Mulvey drained 7-of-11 shots including 3-of-6 from three-point range to pace the Green and White while Lauder connected on 5-of-8 field goals while adding a team-high four assists, two steals and a blocked shot. First-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) added 15 points and six rebounds, sophomore
Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) was good for 14 points and six boards, and senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) contributed 11 points and six rebounds in the victory.
Junior Shay Roban (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.) led all scorers with 24 points for Emerson after connecting on 8-of-11 field goals and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Giulio Volonte (Milan, Italy) added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and junior BJ McNeil (Bowie, Md.) finished with 10 points as the trio accounted for 46 of the Lions' 68 points. Senior Jacob Armant (Arlington, Texas) contributed six points and team highs of five rebounds, three steals and two assists in the loss.
Babson seized an early lead with the first nine points of the game from four different players while keeping the Lions off the board for nearly six minutes. After a Ferdinando three-pointer put the visitors up 12-3, Roban took over for Emerson with 11 straight points, including three consecutive triples to give Emerson a 14-12 lead with 11 minutes on the clock.
It was a one-possession game the next four minutes until Lauder converted a traditional three-point play to put Babson up 24-20. Murphy and Ferdinando followed up with back-to-back three-balls as the lead quickly ballooned to 10 points with five minutes remaining. The Beavers closed the half with a 10-6 run, including five points from Mulvey and three from Lauder, to take a 40-26 lead into the intermission. Roban kept Emerson in the game with 18 first-half points.
O'Toole sandwiched a pair of buckets around a Ferdinando jumper after the break as the Babson lead swelled to 20 points four minutes into the second half. Volonte answered for Emerson with a pair of hoops before junior
NeJohn Fortes (New Bedford, Mass.) drained one from long range and followed with a free throw as Babson restored the 20-point margin with 14 minutes on the clock.
Emerson went on a 14-6 run, sparked by a tradition three-point play and a three-ball by Volonte to pull to within 12 points (60-48), but free throws by O'Toole and Murphy and a triple by Murphy pushed the margin back up to 18 points with eight minutes remaining. Emerson got no closer than 15 points until the final minute of the game.
Babson shot 51.7 percent from the field while holding the Lions to a 46.3 percent clip. The Beavers, who had a 40-26 advantage on the glass, outscored the Lions by a whopping 23-2 on second-chance points.
Both teams are back in action with NEWMAC games on Saturday as Babson visits Wheaton at 3 p.m. and Emerson travels to Clark for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
