WORCESTER, Mass.—Sophomore
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) and first-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) combined for 42 points and visiting Babson College created separation with a 17-0 second-half run on the way to defeating Wheaton College, 89-72, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Emerson Gymnasium.
Babson has won five straight and 11 of its last 12 games to improve to 17-6 overall and 11-3 in conference play. Wheaton had its two-game winning streak snapped and is now 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the NEWMAC.
Ferdinando knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes, while Mulvey also canned four triples and scored 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting in 40 minutes to lead four players in double figures for the Beavers. Senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) provided 12 points, nine boards, four assists and three steals, and sophomore
Vaughn Foster (Paramus, N.J.) added a season-high 12 points in 15 minutes off the bench.
Junior Dimetri Iafrate (Johnston, R.I.) scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while senior Tristan Herry (East Taunton, Mass.) contributed 15 points and six assists to lead the Lyons.
The Green and White was up as many as five twice over the first seven minutes before Wheaton went on a 17-6 run that included six points from Herry to take its largest lead of the game at 26-18 on a three-pointer by sophomore Nick Scandura (Barrington, R.I.) with 8:22 to play in the opening half. Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) scored six straight points to spark a 14-5 spurt that put the Beavers in front 32-31 on a layup by Foster at the 2:15 mark, and Ferdinando followed another bucket by Foster with a triple to send the teams into the break deadlocked at 39.
The teams were separated by more than three points just twice over the first 11 minutes of the second half before Babson pulled away by holding the Lyons scoreless for more than five minutes during a decisive 17-0 run. Foster answered a hoop by Iafrate to make it 65-62 with 9:12 to play, and Mulvey and O'Toole combined for the next 10 points to stretch the margin to 13 with 5:54 remaining.
Ferdinando hit a pair of free throws and senior
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) grabbed an offensive rebound and fed Ferdinando for his fourth three-pointer of the game as the Green and White took its largest lead of the game at 80-62 with 4:38 left.
The Beavers shot 55.4 percent from the field and knocked down 11 three-pointers while finishing with a dominating 37-18 edge on the glass. The Lyons shot 48 percent for the game but were just 2-of-7 from long range over the final 20 minutes after making eight first-half three-pointers.
Both teams are back in action on Wednesday as Babson hosts MIT at 7:30 p.m., while Wheaton is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off against Salve Regina.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 45-16 all-time against Wheaton but completed their first regular season sweep of the Lyons since the 2021-22 campaign.
• Babson is 6-1 on the road in conference play this winter, which includes five victories by double-digits.
• The Green and White is now 14-0 this winter when outrebounding its opponents.
• The Beavers are 12-1 this season and have won 20 of their last 21 games when making at least 10 three-pointers dating back to the start of last season.
