Men's Basketball Fends Off MIT for Sixth Consecutive Win, 61-49

BABSON PARK, Mass.—The duo of sophomore Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) and first-year Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) combined for 42 points to help Babson College defeat visiting MIT, 61-49, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.

With its sixth consecutive victory, Babson improves to 18-6 overall and 12-3 in conference play. MIT has dropped 10 of its last 11 contests to slip to 6-18 overall and 2-13 in the NEWMAC.

Mulvey led all players with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting and two steals, while Ferdinando scored 20 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) scored all nine of his points in the second half, senior Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) led all players with 11 rebounds and two blocks, and classmate Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) tied for game-high honors with three steals in the win.

Junior Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals, while senior Parker Spann (Omaha, Neb.) posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards to lead the Engineers.

The first half featured nine ties and nine lead changes with the teams never separated by more than three points. Ferdinando ended the period with a three-pointer from the right wing that put the Green and White up 31-29 and sparked an 11-0 run around halftime.

Murphy opened the second half with back-to-back three-pointers and Mulvey canned a mid-range jumper to give the Beavers their first double-digit lead of the contest at 39-29 with 17:40 remaining. Babson went more than six minutes without a field goal as MIT closed to within five on a layup by Spann at the 11:31 mark, but Murphy answered with another triple and sophomore Vaughn Foster (Paramus, N.J.) hit a free throw to extend the margin back to 48-39 with 9:20 to play.

The Engineers got as close as six on a free throw by Dobie with 6:47 left before Mulvey and Ferdinando provided all the scoring during a 13-2 run that put the game away. They combined for a trio of three-pointers over the span of four possessions to push the advantage to 57-42 and Ferdinando splashed in a pull-up jumper and then connected on a pair of free throws to give Babson its largest lead of the game at 61-44 with 59 seconds remaining.

The Beavers shot just 39.2 percent from the floor but knocked down 11 three-pointers and finished with a 33-29 edge on the glass. The Engineers, who made just two field goals over the final eight minutes of the contest, shot 38.6 percent from the floor and struggled at the charity stripe going just 11-of-23 (47.8 percent).

Both teams conclude the regular season at 1 p.m. on Saturday as Babson travels to Salve Regina while MIT hosts Coast Guard.
