Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) led all scorers with 20 points and senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds as Babson College defeated the visiting Coast Guard Academy, 86-70, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball on Wednesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.
With its eighth win over the last nine games, Babson improves to 14-6 overall and 8-3 in conference play. Coast Guard has dropped three straight contests to slip to 6-14 overall and 2-10 in the NEWMAC.
Mulvey canned five three-pointers and added three assists and two steals, while O'Toole contributed five assists, five steals and two blocked shots to lead the Beavers. First-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and senior
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) provided a season-high 11 points in the victory.
Senior Elijah Parent (Bristol, Conn.) scored 16 points 7-of-11 shooting, first-year Ashton Kendall (Baltimore, Md.) contributed 15 points on 6-of-8 from the floor and senior Luke Farrell (Ortley Beach, N.J.) added 14 points and seven rebounds to pace the Bears.
The Green and White led by nine at the half but Coast Guard scored on six of its first seven possessions out of the locker room to pull within 49-46 on a steal and layup by Parent with 14:43 remaining in the contest. The teams traded hoops over the next 52 seconds before first-year
Robby Fiore (Acton, Mass.) knocked down a baseline pull-up to spark a 15-1 run for the Beavers.
Fiore made it 56-49 with a three-pointer at the 12:27 and Ferdinando converted a four-point play after splashing in a triple from the top of the key just over a minute later extending the margin to 11. Mulvey finished off a three-point play on the following possession and then buried a trifecta to make it 66-49 with 9:41 to play.
Ferdinando hit two free throws to give Babson its first 20-point lead of the night with 8:04 left and O'Toole scored four points around a dunk by Lauder as the hosts grabbed their largest lead at 80-57 with under five minutes to go.
The Beavers opened the game with an 11-0 run that included hoops from four different players and were up 22-13 after a layup by Lauder at the 9:19 mark of the opening half before Coast Guard used an 8-3 run to pull within 25-21 on a triple by Parent with 7:29 remaining. Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) for a backdoor layup, and Ferdinando hit two free throws over the final 3:27 to help Babson push its advantage back to 42-33 at the break.
The Beavers shot 45.8 percent from the field and finished with a 37-27 edge on the glass while scoring 22 second-chance points and 22 points off turnovers. The Bears shot 48.9 percent from the floor and outscored the Green and White 19-14 at the charity stripe.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson hosts Springfield while Coast Guard takes on Clark.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 67-29 all-time against Coast Guard and have won 14 of the last 16 games played inside Staake Gymnasium.
• O'Toole, who now has six double-doubles this winter, matched his season high with seven offensive rebounds and needs just six more to become the first Babson player over the last 26 years to reach 300 for his career.
• The Green and White hit 10 three-pointers in Wednesday's victory and is now 18-1 over the last two seasons when making double-digit triples.
• The Beavers hoisted 19 first-half three-pointers, which were just one shy of Coast Guard's 20 total field goal attempts in the period.
