CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Babson College men's swimming & diving team posted top-10 finishes in five of six events and had 16 different competitors contribute points on the way to concluding the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships in fourth place on Sunday inside MIT's Zesiger Pool.
The Beavers earned 186 points on day four and finished with 692 for the championship. The point total is the fourth highest since 2002 for the Green and White, which came in fourth for the third season in a row.
No. 6 MIT captured its 17th consecutive NEWMAC title with 1481.5 points, Coast Guard came in second with 1013 points and WPI edged Babson for third place with 731 points. The final day was condensed from the normal two sessions to just the finals with a winter storm bearing down on the region.
Junior
Anthony Taslakov (Sherborn, Mass.) recorded Babson's top individual finish of the day placing fourth with a season-best time of 1:51.54 in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore
Phillip Spiridonov (Ridgewood, N.J.) came in 12th in the event with a season-best time of 1:58.37, while was 0.48 seconds faster than classmate
Thomas Ambelang (Bernardsville, N.J.), who finished 14th. First-year
Wyatt Amos (Gloucester, Mass.) also posted a 15th-place showing with a season-best mark of 2:00.29.
Sophomore
William Iglar (Marietta, Ga.) was the Beavers' top finisher in the 200 breaststroke claiming seventh with a season-best time of 2:06.42. Classmate
Nathan Huynh (Naperville, Ill.) came in 14th in a season-best time of 2:09.05, senior
Marcelo Carrion (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was just under a second behind him in 15th position and first-year
Matthias McFarlane (Trumbull, Conn.) finished 19th in a time of 2:10.99.
First-year
Jason Adler (Merrimac, Mass.) recorded a season-best time of 16:45.77 in the grueling 1650 free to finish in seventh place. Junior
Jason Zeliph (Voorheesville, N.Y.) also competed in the mile and earned points by coming in 16th overall with a season-best time of 17:44.90.
Sophomore
Liam Maloney (Tampa, Fla.) came in 10th in the 200 butterfly in a season-best time of 1:55.86 and classmate
Nehemiah Rhee (Paramus, N.J.) was two spots behind him touching the wall in 1:57.22. First-year
Evan Hong (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished 11th overall in the 100 free with a season-best time of 46.12 and sophomore
Tommy Hannenian (Sacramento, Calif.) also scored by placing 20th with his top time of the year (46.77).
The Beavers wrapped up the meet with a pair of strong performances in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Taslakov, Iglar, McFarlane and Hannenian came in fourth in the A final with a time of 3:04.25, while Cheung, sophomore
Ryan Furudera (Tokyo, Japan), Spiridonov and sophomore
Chase Stevens (Suffield, Conn.) placed third in the B final with a time of 3:09.01.
Furudera swam a 47.79, Stevens posted a mark of 48.23 and senior
Hawken Hammen (East Lyme, Conn.) logged a 49.24 as all three competitors recorded season-best times in the 100 free. Sophomore
Chengetai Zamchiya (Cheverly, Md.) also recorded his fastest time of the season (2:17.76) in the 200 breaststroke.
MEET NOTES
• The Beavers concluded the weekend by setting two school records – McFarlane (100 breaststroke) and the all-conference 800 free relay team of Taslakov, Iglar, Hong and Hannenian – while junior
David Krol (Grafton, Wis.) garnered All-NEWMAC honors by coming in second in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

Eric Thurston has now led the Babson men to four top-four finishes in the standings, which includes coming in third in 2023.
• Babson's time of 3:04.25 now ranks third on the program's top performances list, while Adler's mark in the 1650 free is fifth-best.
