David Krol (Grafton, Wis.) earned his second all-conference honor of the meet and first-year
Matthias McFarlane (Trumbull, Conn.) set a pair of school records and achieved an NCAA B cut in the 100 breaststroke to highlight day three of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for the Babson College men's swimming & diving team on Saturday at MIT's Zesiger Pool.
The Beavers totaled 227 points on Saturday and remain in fourth place with 506 points through 14 events. Babson is just 18.5 points behind third-place WPI, while MIT (1066.5 points) is first with a substantial lead over second-place Coast Guard (670 points).
Krol, who finished as the runner-up in the 3-meter diving event on Thursday night, earned his second all-conference award of the weekend and third of his career by finishing second on the 1-meter board in Saturday's finals with a career-best score of 487.40. He joined Aaron Paradis '10, who achieved the feat in 2007, as the only two Babson divers to earn All-NEWMAC honors in both diving events in the same season.
McFarlane continued his terrific NEWMAC Championships debut by qualifying third with a time of 55.44 in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday morning before achieving an NCAA B cut and setting a pair of program records in the finals. He touched the wall with a time of 54.62 to shatter
Pat Anutarasoti's '25 mark of 55.10 on the way to finishing third, and also set a new program standard with his 50-yard split of 25.41.
Junior
Anthony Taslakov (Sherborn, Mass.) also earned a spot on the podium in Saturday's finals by coming in third with a time of 1:40.23 in the 200 free.
Sophomore
Nathan Huynh (Naperville, Ill.) came in sixth in the A final of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.06, while senior
Zackary Cheung (Monterey Park, Calif.) placed ninth in the A final of the 100 butterfly in a season-best time of 50.28. Huynh and Cheung also joined McFarlane and sophomore
Thomas Ambelang (Bernardsville, N.J.) to help the Beavers come in fourth in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:31.19 that was just 0.16 seconds off the program record.
Senior
Marcelo Carrion (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded a runner-up finish in the B final of the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 51.60, sophomore
Nehemiah Rhee (Paramus, N.J.) came in second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:15.45, and three Babson competitors finished among the top four in the B final of the 200 free. First-year
Evan Hong (Longmeadow, Mass.) touched the wall with a season-best time of 1:41.30 that was good for second place, sophomore
Tommy Hannenian (Sacramento, Calif.) was just 0.27 seconds behind him in third and classmate
William Iglar (Marietta, Ga.) placed fourth with a time of 1:42.24.
Ambelang finished fourth in the B final of the 100 butterfly in a time of 51.85 and fifth in the B final of the 100 backstroke touching the wall in 52.90, while sophomore
Chengetai Zamchiya (Cheverly, Md.) claimed seventh place in the B final of the 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 58.24. First-year
Hadi Aldayaa (Chelmsford, Mass.) came in seventh on the 1-meter diving board with a season-best score of 352.25, junior
Jason Zeliph (Voorheesville, N.Y.) finished ninth in the B final of the 400 IM (4:33.36) and first-year
Wyatt Amos (Gloucester, Mass.) added a ninth-place showing in the B final of the 100 backstroke (53.61).
In addition to the fourth-place finish in the A final, the Beavers' quartet of Taslakov, Zamchiya, senior
Hawken Hammen (East Lyme, Conn.) and Hong came in second in the B final for the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.87.
With the forecast calling for heavy snow beginning Sunday afternoon, the final day of the championship will be cut down to just one session beginning at 10 a.m.
