Register for Wednesday's Shattered Ice Movie Screening and Panel Discussion
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Spearheaded by senior goaltender
Mason Rosado (Weddington, N.C.), the Babson College men's ice hockey program has joined forces with Babson Wellness & Prevention Services to hold a pair of events around mental health and suicide prevention this week.
Rosado and his teammates have partnered with
Nehoiden Street Films, LLC. to screen Shattered Ice, which will be followed by a panel discussion on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. inside Knight Auditorium. On Saturday, the Beavers will team up with the
KyleCares Foundation to host a mental health awareness game when they host Western Connecticut State at 4 p.m. inside the Babson Skating Center.
Written and produced by Needham, Mass., native and Springfield College graduate Jake Miskin, Shattered Ice was filmed in 2024 and has won awards at seven different film festivals over the last two years. The movie draws inspiration from the mental health challenges experienced by Miskin during his high school years after losing four classmates to suicide.
Mental health and suicide prevention are topics that hit close to home for Rosado, who lost his older brother, Matías, to suicide in 2021. Following his brother's death, Mason, who serves on the board of directors, and his family started the
Matías Rosado Foundation (MRF), which is the lead financial sponsor for both of this week's events.
"The screening and panel is a great way to spark conversation around mental health," he said. "Suicide is the second leading cause of death among late teens and young adults, so it's really important to talk about it with each other and within our community to make sure everyone understands they aren't alone while dealing with mental health struggles."
Babson will join a number of colleges, professional hockey franchises and mental health organizations in screening Shattered Ice. Wednesday's event will also feature a panel discussion that includes Miskin; Babson Pamela P. and Brian M. Barefoot Associate Vice President for Athletics and Athletics Advancement
Mike Lynch;
Kimberly O'Brien, founder and director of Unlimited Resilience, LLC, and co-founder and director of programs for Better Together; and actor and former University of Maine hockey player
Pat Shea.
The event will also feature a raffle with over $1,000 in prizes and free Chick-fil-A for Babson students.
On Saturday against Western Connecticut State, Babson will wear special recognition jerseys to promote the KyleCares Foundation, which was launched in 2019. Kyle Johnson, a 19-year-old college student from North Attleboro, Mass., died by suicide on April 2, 2018, and the Johnson family started the foundation in his memory.
KyleCares is dedicated to promoting open and honest communication about the mental health challenges faced by teens and young adults in today's society.
