BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College sophomore
Izzy Lee (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored in the sixth minute and visiting WPI equalized midway through the second half as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson, which is unbeaten over its last five matches, is now 4-4-2 overall and 1-0-2 in conference play. WPI, which has lost just once over its last seven games, is now 5-4-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Sophomore
Sarah Hogan (South Glastonbury, Conn.) collected her first career assist and classmate
Maisie Creamer (Boulder, Colo.) made four second-half saves for the Beavers. Senior goalkeeper
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) started and stopped one shot over the first 45 minutes.
Junior Ayla Verheul (Naardan, The Netherlands) stopped both shots she faced over the final 85 minutes after sophomore Abigail Marsolais (Norton, Mass.), who made one save, left with an injury.
The Green and White wasted little time taking the lead just 5:23 into the contest when Lee beat Marsolais to Hogan's cross into the box and touched the ball home for her fourth goal of the season. Creamer made a pair of terrific saves to keep the hosts in front in the 55th minute, tipping junior Abigail Johnson's (Middletown, Conn.) 25-yard blast off the crossbar before recovering to make a diving stop on sophomore Aliza Margolis' (Wakefield, Mass.) rebound attempt at the left post.
The Engineers found the equalizer in the 68th minute on a restart following a foul by Babson along the right flank. Johnson hit a free kick towards the near post that skipped over sophomore Tiziri Tizi-Ougdal (Acton, Mass.) and deflected off a Babson defender and past Creamer.
WPI junior Madisen McLeod's (Ledyard, Conn.) shot from distance took a deflection and floated off the crossbar in the 70th minute, and the Beavers' two best second-half scoring chances were just off target. Junior
Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) split a pair of defenders but saw her blast from the top of the box sail just over the crossbar in the 52nd minute, while Lee sent a header off a corner kick by sophomore
Lindsey Cassady (Westfield, Ind.) wide of the right post in the 67th minute.
The Green and White held slim edges in shots (15-12) and corner kicks (4-3), while the Engineers finished with a 6-4 margin in shots on goal.
Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Clark at 7 p.m., while WPI visits Salve Regina next Saturday at 12 p.m.
