Late Goal Helps Middlebury Edge Women's Soccer, 1-0

Cottone Makes a Career-High 10 Saves as Beavers Have Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak Snapped

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Brooks DeShaw (Burlington, Vt.) scored the only goal of the match in the 81st minute to lift visiting Middlebury College to a 1-0 win over Babson College in non-conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Babson, which had its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped, dips to 5-5-3 on the year. Middlebury, which has lost just once over its last nine matches, improves to 4-2-4 overall with the win.

The loss spoiled a terrific performance by Beavers' senior goalkeeper Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.), who finished with a career-high 10 saves. Her counterpart, Panthers' sophomore Aubrey Silvestri (Bradenton, Fla.), made four of her five stops in the second half of her season debut.

Scoreless into the final 10 minutes, sophomore Kacy Walker (San Rafael, Calif.) collected a failed clearance by Babson, and junior Taya McClennen's (Jackson, Wyo.) pass from the top of the box took a deflection and made its way to the feet of DeShaw, who drilled a hard right-footed shot inside the left post for her first career marker.

The Green and White pressed hard for an equalizer, but Silvestri was able to snare a glancing header by junior Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) off a long service into the box by senior Priscilla-Rose Men-Martin (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) in the 85th minute. She then got her fingertips on a looping shot from distance by sophomore Lindsey Cassady (Westfield, Ind.) that deflected off the crossbar and out of danger with less than 30 seconds remaining. Sophomore Sara Hogan (South Glastonbury, Conn.) also chipped a shot wide off a terrific cross by McAughan in the 89th minute.

Cottone made her best save of the game in the 10th minute, diving to her left to snag a blast from the top of the box by sophomore Mariana Rode (Fairfax, Calif.). Silvestri also came up big in the 20th minute, racing off her line to smother a shot from inside 10 yards by Babson sophomore Izzy Lee (Phoenix, Ariz.) after she ran onto a through ball.

The Panthers finished with a 20-15 edge in shots, although the Beavers held a 12-7 advantage over the final 45 minutes. Middlebury also attempted the only corner kick of the game less than 100 seconds into the contest.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Salve Regina at 3:30 p.m., while the Panthers take on Southern Maine on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
