BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore
Adam Stetson (Gill, Mass.) scored his first career goal as No. 9 Babson College played to a 1-1 draw at MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field.
Babson, which has finished deadlocked in back-to-back conference games, is 6-2-3 overall and 1-0-2 in league play. MIT extended its unbeaten streak to six matches and is now 4-3-4 overall and 2-0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Graduate student
Will Devall (Shoreham, N.Y.) finished with two saves for the Beavers. Senior Nico Mangiafico (Farmington, Conn.) scored a goal and first-year Nicolas Santos-Shin (New York, N.Y.) stopped six shots for the Engineers.
Stetson opened the scoring in the 11th minute when he took a pass from junior
Henry Bacon (Colchester, Vt.) just inside the midfield stripe and took a couple touches before drilling a low rocket from nearly 40 yards out past Santos-Shin and inside the left post for the first marker of his career. MIT's best scoring chance of the opening half came in the 18th minute as Bacon headed away a powerful header by junior Canon Robins (Virginia Beach, Va.) from inside six yards off the goal line before graduate student
Cam Merrill (New Gloucester, Maine) stretched to block the rebound attempt by sophomore Max Cassidy (Marion, Iowa) following a corner kick.
Santos-Shin held the left post to deny Babson senior
Alexander Yablonovskiy's (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) header at the 72:10 mark and the Engineers tied the game 50 seconds later on a terrific individual effort by Mangiafico. After chasing down a long ball on the left wing, he beat a defender and ripped a curling 25-yard shot into the upper right corner for his second goal of the year.
Both sides produced scoring chances over a frenetic final 10 minutes, including Merrill missing just wide of the right post with 4:49 remaining and Santos-Shin laying out to push away sophomore
Connor Hanrahan's (Naperville, Ill.) bid in the 89th minute. A long free kick by junior Shikhar Montupally (Avon, Conn.) sailed over Devall and was touched just over the crossbar with under 40 seconds to play, and Babson junior
Christian Gardner (Miami, Fla.) sent his last-ditch effort just wide after senior
Will Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) had his shot blocked in the waning seconds.
The Beavers finished with a slim 13-10 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks on the day.
Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m., while MIT takes on Fitchburg State on Thursday at 6 p.m.
