WORCESTER, Mass.—Sophomore
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.,) poured in a career-high 32 points and visiting Babson College never trailed on the way to defeating Clark University, 73-62, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday evening inside the Kneller Athletic Center.
Babson has now won seven of its last eight games to improve to 13-7 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Clark, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, dips to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in the NEWMAC.
Mulvey was 10-of-22 from the floor and knocked down six three-pointers, while first-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) contributed 16 points and a game-high four steals for the Beavers. Senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) posted a double-double with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots, and classmate
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) pulled down six boards and dished out a team-high five assists in the win.
First-year Aliaun Iscandari (Hawthorne, Calif.) scored 17 points, sophomore Boluwasefe John (Corona, N.Y.) provided 15 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Reid Neumann (Burbank, Calif.) hit four three-pointers and ended with 14 points to pace the Cougars.
The Green and White forced six early turnovers and Ferdinando and Mulvey cashed in back-to-back three-points to give the Green and White an 18-8 advantage just over seven minutes into the contest. Clark cut the deficit to five twice over the final nine minutes of the period and pulled within 36-32 on a layup by sophomore Kyle Squires (Kingston, Mass.) with 23 seconds to go until halftime, but Mulvey beat the buzzer with a three-pointer that sparked a 7-0 run to put the Beavers back up 11 just over two minutes into the second half.
The Cougars cut the Babson lead to six twice with the last coming at 52-46 on a layup by John with 11:29 remaining only to see Mulvey answer with a three-pointer and O'Toole convert a layup to stretch the margin back to 57-46 at the 10:46 mark. The Green and White made just two field goals over a span of nearly seven minutes before Ferdinando finished off an old fashioned three-point play to make it 64-52 with 3:56 left.
John scored Clark's next six points to get the hosts within 68-60 on a dunk with 1:24 left but Babson went 5-of-6 at the charity stripe over the next 53 seconds to put the game out of reach.
The Beavers shot 45.6 percent from the floor and scored 21 points off 17 turnovers by the Cougars. Clark, which held a 35-29 edge on the glass, shot 47.1 percent for the game but was just 5-of-20 from beyond the arc (25 percent) and 9-of-15 (60 percent) at the free throw line.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Babson hosts Coast Guard while the Cougars take on Salve Regina.
