NEW LONDON, Conn.—Senior Dorothy Stotts (Edina, Minn.) and sophomore Olivia Wright (Midlothian, Va.) each scored 19 points to help the Coast Guard Academy defeat visiting Babson College, 68-50, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Roland Hall.
Both Babson and Coast Guard are now 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Graduate student
Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Beavers. Sophomore
Alessa Mendoza (Yonkers, N.Y.) recorded nine points, four boards and three assists, while senior
Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in with eight points in the loss.
Wright was 6-of-8 shooting and went 5-of-6 at the free throw line, while Stotts added five rebounds, two assists and two steals to go along with her 19 points. Sophomore Elliot Geer (Jay, Okla.) also provided 11 points, six boards, two assists and two steals in the victory.
The Green and White survived an early 15-3 run by Coast Guard and trailed by just four at the break following a frenetic opening half. The hosts were up 19-10 after one but Flynn and sophomore
Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) combined for 10 of the Beavers' next 12 points, and Mendoza followed a bucket by sophomore
Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) with a pull-up jumper to give the visitors a 26-25 lead with 3:24 remaining in the second quarter.
Down 34-30 at the break, Babson used a three-pointer by senior
Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) and a floater by Flynn to get within one just over two minutes into the third before the Bears pulled away with a 17-4 spurt that included seven points from Wright and five apiece from Stotts and senior Taylor Lynch (Madison, Ind.) to extend their advantage to 53-39 with 3:32 to go in the stanza. Flynn opened the fourth quarter with a layup and Mendoza followed with a short jumper to cut the Beavers' deficit to 56-45 with 6:53 remaining, only to see Geer and Stotts answer with back-to-back layups to stretch the difference back to 15 less than a minute later.
Wright scored Coast Guard's final seven points and the hosts limited the Green and White to just two field goals over the final six minutes while extending their lead to as many as 20 before a late three-pointer by Perreault.
The Beavers shot 35.5 percent from the floor and were just 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from three-point range while turning 18 Coast Guard turnovers into 17 points. The Bears shot 42.4 percent from the floor and outscored the Green and White 10-3 at the free throw line.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson travels to MIT, while Coast Guard heads to Wellesley.
