BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds and Babson College closed the game by scoring on 10 of its final 11 possessions to defeat visiting Emerson College, 61-52, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball actin on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.
With its fourth consecutive victory, Babson improves to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Emerson has dropped five of its last six games to dip to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC.
Senior
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) provided 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals, while sophomore
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) and first-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) also scored 11 points for the Beavers. Sophomore
Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) chipped in with nine points and classmate
Ryan Frauenheim (Manasquan, N.J.) went 7-of-8 at the free three line to finish with seven points and two assists in the win.
Junior Shay Roban (Roslyn Heights, N.J.) scored 12 of his game-high 14 points in the second half to lead the Lions. Senior Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany) added eight points and nine rebounds, while classmate Brendan McNamara (Arlington, Mass.) led all players with four assists in the loss.
All five Babson starters contributed points to build a 15-7 lead just over seven minutes into the contest. Emerson closed to within four twice but back-to-back hoops by Ferdinando and consecutive three-pointers by Mulvey and Murphy keyed a 13-4 run that extended the margin to 30-17 with 6:20 left in the first half.
The Lions, who trailed 32-21 at the break, cut their deficit to six on a bucket by sophomore Giulio Volonte (Milan, Italy) before Lauder snapped a field-goal drought of nearly 13 minutes for the Beavers with a layup to make it 35-27 with 13:30 to go in the contest. Emerson followed with an extended 12-2 run that included triples by Roban and McNamara to pull even at 37 on a pull-up jumper by senior Jacob Armant (Arlington, Texas) with 6:52 remaining.
The Green and White punched back though, as Murphy and Mulvey canned back-to-back three-pointers while Lauder and O'Toole combined for the next 10 points as the hosts scored on seven consecutive possessions to regain a 53-45 advantage with 2:23 to play. Emerson got as close as five twice over the final two minutes but Mulvey answered with a mid-range jumper and Frauenheim and Ferdinando made six straight free throws over the final 40 seconds to put the game away.
The Beavers shot just 36.2 percent from the floor but committed a season-low five turnovers and outscored the visitors 13-2 at the free throw line. The Lions shot 37.3 percent and finished with a 39-35 edge on the glass.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson travels to MIT for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff, while Emerson visits WPI at 7 p.m.
