Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Stifles MIT for Fifth Straight Win, 80-51

Beavers Open Game with 20-3 Run, Knockdown 16 Three-Pointers in Blowout Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Sophomore Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) and first-year Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) both hit five three-pointers and visiting Babson College built a 17-point lead just over 10 minutes into the contest on the way to defeating MIT, 80-51, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Tuesday night inside Rockwell Cage.

With its fifth straight win, Babson improves to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play. MIT has dropped two straight games to slip to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in the NEWMAC.

Ferdinando went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and led all players with 19 points, while Mulvey was 5-of-8 from deep on the way to scoring 17 points to pace the Beavers. Sophomore Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) contributed nine points, senior Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) added eight and sophomore NeJohn Fortes (New Bedford, Mass.) chipped in with six points in the win.

Junior Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) scored 16 points and classmates Michael Zhang (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Wyatt Mowery (Winston-Salem, N.C.) provided eight points apiece to lead the Engineers.

The Green and White forced five early turnovers and got three-pointers from Ferdinando, Mulvey and Murphy to build and 11-0 advantage less than four minutes into the contest. Mulvey and sophomore Vaughn Foster (Paramus, N.J.) answered a triple by Zhang with trifectas of their own and Ferdinando cashed in his second three-pointer of the night to push the margin to 20-3 with 9:42 to go before halftime.

Ferdinando gave Babson its largest lead of the opening stanza with another triple to make it 27-8 at the 7:21 mark, but MIT answered with an 11-4 spurt to get as close as 31-19 on two free throws by Mowery with 3:57 to go in the period. The Beavers extended their cushion back to 14 at the half and put the game away by outscoring the hosts 23-8 over the first 11 minutes of the second half.

Murphy drilled a pair of three-pointers during a 10-4 run that pushed the lead to 49-29 just over five minutes out of the break, and the Babson went on an 11-0 spurt after a bucket by Dobie to stretch the margin to 62-33 on two free throws by O'Toole with 9:09 to play. Junior Jake Peterson (Hanover, Mass.) gave the Green and White its first 30 point lead with a triple from the top of the key a minute later and first-year Jackson O'Brien (Glen Cove, N.Y.) gave the visitors their largest lead of the night on a layup with under two minutes left.

The Beavers shot 44.8 percent from the floor and went 16-of-31 (51.6 percent) from beyond the arc while turning 19 MIT turnovers into 29 points. The Engineers, who missed 10 of their first 11 shots while committing six turnovers over the first 10 minutes of the game, recorded their lowest field goal percentage (33.6) since the season opener back on November 10.

Both teams return to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. as Babson hosts Salve Regina, while MIT travels to Coast Guard.
