NEW BEDFORD, Mass.— Sophomore
Evan Brown (Little Silver, N.J.) and senior
Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) scored back-to-back goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and No. 10 Babson College went on to a 4-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in Little East Conference (LEC) men's ice hockey action Friday evening inside Hetland Arena.
With the victory, Babson has won four of its last five games to improve to 11-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the LEC. UMass Dartmouth had a five-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 8-6-0 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play.
Junior
Joseph Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior
Mike Stevens (Massapequa, N.Y.) also potted goals for the Beavers, and seniors
Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ont.),
Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.),
Ian Driscoll (Middleton, Mass.), and
Cam Joslin (Cohasset, Mass.), junior
Jimmy Fallon (Milton, Mass.), and sophomore
Raphael Marcoux (Quebec City, Que.) all collected assists. Senior
Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) made 28 saves in goal in the victory.
Senior Tyler Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied the lone goal for the Corsairs with assists from senior Vincent Nicosia (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and first-year Chris Cardillo (Sandwich, Mass.). Senior Grahan Burke (Wilmington, Del.) finished with 40 saves in the setback.
Babson outshot the hosts 13-5 and both teams had a power play opportunity in the first period but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. The Beavers broke through in the second frame after a face-off in the UMD zone when Kennedy dropped a pass back to Marcoux at the left point, Marcoux fired a shot through traffic that was rejected by Burke, and Kramer buried the rebound from the slot at 4:46 for his second goal of the season.
The Corsairs answered with a power play goal later in the second period. A shot from the left circle by Nicosia was deflected by Stewart on goal, but Mueller's kick save ricocheted off a Babson defenseman and ended up in the back of the net to tie the game at 15:54.
The Beavers took the lead for good at 7:52 of the third period when Fallon fed Schmitt in the right circle and Schmitt sent a nice back-handed pass across the crease to Brown near the left circle, and Brown ripped a shot past Burke for his fifth of the season to put the Green and White up 2-1.
Just a minute and a half later the Beavers extended the margin to two goals as Murphy carried the puck from his own zone into the attacking zone, crossed over to the right circle and snapped a shot inside the right post glove side for his fourth goal of the season at 9:23 for a 3-1 lead.
The Green and White sealed the win with just over a minute remaining when Joslin broke up a UMD attack in the neutral zone and flipped a pass over the Corsair defense and Stevens finished things off with an empty netter, his second goal of the season.
Babson ended up with a 44-28 advantage in shots on goal. The hosts scored once in four power play opportunities while holding the Beavers scoreless in three tries with the man advantage.
Both teams return to the ice for LEC games on Saturday as Babson travels to UMass Boston for a 4 p.m. face-off and the Corsairs host Southern Maine at 4:30 p.m.
