Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Brown’s Overtime Goal Lifts No. 10 Men’s Ice Hockey Past UMass Boston, 5-4

BOSTON— Sophomore Evan Brown (Little Silver, N.J.) tallied a goal and two assists, including the game-winner with 49 seconds remaining in overtime, as No. 10 Babson College got past the University of Massachusetts Boston, 5-4, in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's ice hockey game Saturday afternoon inside the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

With the victory, Babson has won five of its last six games to improve to 12-2-2 overall and 7-1-1 in the LEC. UMass Boston had a seven-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 10-5-0 overall and 5-3-0 in conference play.

Seniors Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.), Ian Driscoll (Middleton, Mass.) and Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.) and junior Sean Senier (Melrose, Mass.) all scored for the Beavers, and senior Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ont.) recorded two assists. Seniors Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.), Mike Stevens (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Nolan Woudenberg (Collegeville, Pa.) and sophomore Raphael Marcoux (Quebec City, Que.) produced assists, and senior Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) made 23 saves in goal in the victory.

Junior Matt Sullivan (Hingham, Mass.) and seniors Steven Spetz (Oak Ridge, N.J.), Jack Ford (Middletown, Del.) and Jude Kurtas (Hillsborough, N.J.) notched goals for the Beacons, and junior Chris Repmann (Middletown, N.J.) collected a pair of helpers. Juniors Chris Merryman (Peabody, Mass.) and Jacob Kaminski (Greenville, Mich.), first-year Kyle Isenberg (Anaheim, Calif.), and senior Dylan Robbins (New York, N.Y.) tallied one assist each and sophomore Connor McDonough (Mendham, N.J.)  finished with 34 saves in the loss.

The Beacons scored the only goal of the first period when Repmann sent a pass from behind the net to Sullivan in the slot and Sullivan hit a one-timer past Mueller at 7:09 for the 1-0 lead.

The teams erupted for five goals in the second period, ignited by two Babson goals in a span of 12 seconds. Andriole capitalized on a UMB turnover along the left boards and snapped a wrister from the left circle that beat McDonough stick side inside the left post at 9:42, and Senier worked a give and go along with right boards before lifting a backhander past McDonough from below the right circle into the far corner at 9:54 to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

UMB tied the score at 2-2 with a power play goal at 13:53 when Spetz snapped a shot from the blue line that went in through a crowd in front of the goal. Less than two minutes later the teams traded goals 21 seconds apart as Driscoll scored on a rebound for Babson at 15:23 after McDonough made a save on Murphy at point blank range, and Ford picked up a loose puck near the slot and slid a shot underneath Mueller at 15:44 to make it 3-3 after two.

The Beacons scored a go-ahead goal at 14:15 of the third period when Kurtas stole a crossing pass in his own zone, skated the length of the ice on a breakaway and beat Mueller glove side inside the right post. Babson, which had to kill off a late penalty, got a tying goal with an empty net from Schmitt with 1:01 remaining on a rebound after a shot by Brown was denied.

Both goalies were outstanding in the extra session, each making three saves during the 3-on-3 action. Babson won it when Marcoux sent Brown in on a breakaway and he ripped a shot past McDonough glove side inside the right post with just 49 seconds remaining.

Babson finished with a 39-27 advantage in shots on goal. The hosts scored once in three power play opportunities while holding the Beavers scoreless in two tries with the man advantage.

The Beavers will return home to welcome Western Connecticut and Keene State for an LEC weekend on January 23-24 inside the Babson Skating Center. UMass Boston plays a home and home against UMass Dartmouth next weekend.
