BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore
Timmy Muvley (Reading, Mass.) tied the program's single-game record with eight three-pointers and led all players with 24 points as Babson College defeated visiting Wheaton College, 73-55, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Thursday night inside Staake Gymnasium.
With its third consecutive victory, Babson improves to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Wheaton has dropped back-to-back games to slip to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC.
First-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half to go along with five assists and four rebounds, while sophomore
Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) added 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting for the Beavers. Six different players scored at least six points in the win, which includes senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.), who also contributed seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks.
Senior Tristan Herry (East Taunton, Mass.) scored a team-high 14 points, junior Dimetri Iafrate (Johnston, R.I.) added 13 points and two steals, and first-year Wyatt Benoit (Saco, Maine) chipped in with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go along with two steals to pace the Lyons.
Mulvey and sophomore
Theo Lamb (San Francisco, Calif.) combined to score Babson's first 13 points and Murphy canned a triple from the left corner to give the hosts a five-point lead less than eight minutes into the contest. Wheaton pulled within 18-16 on a layup by Herry but the Green and White followed with a 13-3 spurt that included a bucket by sophomore
Vaughn Foster (Paramus, N.J.) and three-pointers by Mulvey, Murphy and Ferdinando to extend its cushion to 31-19 with 5:20 to go before halftime.
The Lyons trailed by 10 at the break and got as close as seven three times over the first seven minutes of the second half before the Beavers put the game away with a 25-6 run. Mulvey and Murphy canned back-to-back triples before Lamb finished off a feed from O'Toole to push the margin to 54-39 with 11:12 to play.
Benoit scored four straight points but Mulvey answered with a three-pointer, sophomore
Ryan Frauenheim (Manasquan, N.J.) connected on a floater in the paint and Murphy turned a steal into a dunk in transition to make it 61-43 at the 8:31 mark. Muvley drained two more trifectas after a hoop by O'Toole and senior
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) gave Babson its largest lead of the night at 71-45 on a layup with 4:37 to go.
The Beavers shot 52.7 percent from the floor and 50 percent (13-of-26) from beyond the arc in addition to turning 14 Wheaton turnovers into 19 points. The Lyons shot 42.9 percent for the game but were just 4-of-16 from deep (25 percent) and made just 9-of-16 free throws.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday as Babson hosts Emerson at 3 p.m., while Wheaton takes on Clark at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 44-16 all-time against Wheaton and have won 13 of the last 15 matchups between the teams inside Staake Gymnasium.
• Mulvey's eight three-pointers match the single-game record set by Phil Riffe '05 in 2004 against Bowdoin and matched by Matthew Palazini '14 in 2012 also versus Bowdoin and Nick Comenale '18 in a 2016 win over Becker.
• The Green and White is now 9-1 this season when making at least 10 three-pointers.
• The Beavers are 4-1 this winter and have won 16 of their last 18 games when holding opponents below 70 points.
